Office of Health Promotion hosts candlelight vigil as part of Sexual Assault Awareness Month

Syracuse University’s Office of Health Promotion hosted its biggest night of Sexual Assault Awareness Month with a keynote speaker and candlelight vigil, helping end a month’s worth of educational programming.

Some 15 people gathered in the HBC Gifford Auditorium on Monday night to listen to Mirabelle Jones share her story and artwork. The crowd then moved outside for the 5th annual SU Rising Candlelight Vigil.

Central New York dancers come together to trot and tango

On Sunday, April 23, the SU Ballroom Team collaborated with local guest artists and professionals to present the first-ever Syracuse Ballroom Showcase.

On Sunday night, the Syracuse Ballroom Dance Team and the local USA Dance chapter teamed up to present the first-ever Syracuse Ballroom Showcase in Goldstein Auditorium.

The night commenced with a 45-minute show, featuring ten differently styled dances from swing and cha-cha to waltz and tango. In addition to the SU Ballroom Team, dancers from the community, a couple from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute and national championship-winning dancers participated in the event.

The air in Manley Field House was buzzing with eagerness. Not for a Syracuse basketball game like it did over 35 years ago. This eagerness was to begin walking.

Block Party tickets accidentally shipped to students' home addresses

Students will be able to use their original tickets, or have them re-printed by the Carrier Dome Box Office.

Update at 10:10 a.m. on April 18

The Carrier Dome Box Office reached out to the affected students, saying that the error ocurred "due to an error at the Ticketmaster processing center". Students will be able to use the original tickets that were shipped because the barcodes on them will still be active. If students are unable to get their original tickets, the Box Office will re-print them. This will, in turn, void the barcodes on the original tickets.

Per the email, this error only applied to floor tickets for Block Party.

All Star C.A.S.T. allows actors and actresses with disabilities to shine on stage

Although people with disabilities are often left out of films and shows, VPA's All Star C.A.S.T. workshop teaches them stage skills and allows them to showcase their acting talents.

When retired Syracuse University VPA professor Elizabeth Ingram brought her daughter Becci, who has Down syndrome, to theaters around England, people stared. Their negative experiences in London did not turn Becci away from theater, though. After moving to Massachusetts, Becci gathered neighbors and friends to perform the plays she wrote and directed as part of “The Buckingham Players,” named after the street the Ingrams lived on.

OrangeAbility combats disability discrimination in sports

Disability Student Union’s event OrangeAbility created a space where people with and without disabilities play accessible sports together.

On Sunday April 2, the Disability Student Union (DSU) hosted their annual event, OrangeAbility. OrangeAbility is an accessible sports expo, which gives people with and without disabilities the opportunity to try sports that are inclusive to all ability levels, such as wheelchair basketball or sled hockey.

21 Savage fails to deliver on the hype in State of Emergency concert

For the price of $10, I saw 21 Savage. Yet, short and simple is how to describe 21 Savage’s performance in Goldstein Auditorium for Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity’s State of Emergency concert. 21 Savage performed music from his recent collection, and although his music has earned him a huge fan base, his performance falls short. The rising artist seemed like he was there to play a few songs and get off the stage as he barely interacted with his audience, failing to produce the hype the fraternity’s previous concerts brought.

YouTube and HBO star Issa Rae discussed her rise on the Internet, her future ventures, and much more in an interview led by E! News correspondent Zuri Hall.

Had it not been for Issa Rae’s prodigious talent for catfishing at the ripe age of 11, it’s possible that HBO’s new hit series Insecure would not exist. According to the 32-year-old star of the show, her internet fascination began through an innocent trolling of sorts.

“I was a thirsty middle schooler,” Rae said. “But online I was poppin’.”

Commentary: Senior Michaela Quigley visited 23 companies in Silicon Valley over spring break and received advice from Syracuse University alumni and CEOs.

The CEO of LiveFyre, Jordan Kretchmer, sat waiting to hear my pitch. He was dressed casually in a black sweater with jeans, mimicking the relaxed West Coast work dress code. Despite his casual vibe, I still felt intimidated by his presence, knowing that he founded a company that raised well over 50 million dollars in funds and was acquired by Adobe Systems. I'd prepared for this moment while showering earlier that morning.
