Coming Back Together: Syracuse reunited with community through basketball

A basketball game at a local city high school raised money for a scholarship fund at SU. The game featured former SU basketball players who coached and played in the game.

Basketball is how former Syracuse University stars Derrick Coleman and Billy Owens entertained many in the community for years.

Last night at Henninger High School, they used basketball to bring the community together in a different way.

The American climate conundrum

SU students from across the country represent the United States' divided perceptions of climate change.

For Eric King, learning about climate change for the first time was a confusing experience. His eighth grade science class in Columbus, Ohio, was taught two different theories: First, that the changes in weather patterns were part of the natural rhythms of the Earth and not connected to human actions, and second, that climate change was a consequence of greenhouse gas emissions and other human activities. 

 “At the end people walked out saying ‘well no one really knows what’s going on,’” the magazine journalism senior said.

How Syracuse Stage and SU work together to produce quality performances

The professional theater has partnered with the university's drama department for 40 years, allowing students to work alongside their professors, faculty and other professionals.

Scores of students sit outside the former Regent’s Theater, laughing, running lines and soaking up the sunshine. The plaza is lined with futuristic chrome walls, the light bouncing off almost blinding passersby.

The building behind the small set of walls is the Syracuse Stage. Patrons entering the lobby are met with a cool, shady atrium lined with photos from past and present shows.

A gaggle of eager prospective students show up to Syracuse Stage, hoping to gain entry to the Syracuse University Department of Drama.

Female grads face the realities of gender pay gap

It’s 2017 and women, on average, still don’t get paid as much as men. That’s more than half a century after Congress enacted the Equal Pay Act in 1963.

SU student-led companies dominate the New York Business Plan Competition

Several student businesses advanced to the New York Business Plan Competition and won first place in their categories as well as the $100,000 grand prize.

On Friday, April 28, 11 SU student teams participated in the annual New York Business Plan Competition for the chance to win the $100,000 grand prize. The companies earned their spots at the NYBP Competition after finishing first or second in their categories at the iSchool’s RvD iPrize competition in March.

It started with a concerned skepticism:

"There's no way he missed his flight that's just a rumor."

Then some worried, misguided ramblings:

"How did University Union f— this up again?"

Syrian Accountability Project shares latest findings with Syracuse University community

“The goal of this paper was to shine light on the events that took place in this city,” said Zachary Lucas, the executive director of the Syrian Accountability Project.

The Syrian Accountability Project, a student-run organization composed of Syracuse University College of Law students, released its paper titled, “Covered in Dust, Veiled by Shadow: The Siege and Destruction of Aleppo” Thursday morning in the Joyce Hergenhan Auditorium.

The changing landscape of Marshall Street

Now that Hungry Chuck's closed and Orange Crate Brewing Co. is moving, students and the greater community are feeling the effects of the Marshall Street area's changing nightlife scene.

Three male students strolled slowly down the Syracuse University promenade, backpacks on as they headed home from campus after a long Tuesday of classes. An orange April sunset cast a long shadow ahead of them as they talked, laughed and discussed their plans for the evening.

“You going out tonight, bro?” one student asked another.

“I definitely want to. I mean, how many nights do we have left?” the second responded.

“I mean, but where are we going to go?”
