Syracuse University lent a hand in hosting the city’s first Air Guitar Competition on April 22.

The Event

The Department of Art and Music Histories at Syracuse University’s College of Arts and Sciences teamed with The Red House Arts Center and the national U.S. Air Guitar Competition to host Syracuse’s first annual Air Guitar Competition on April 22. Performer Paul Martino of Syracuse, known as Math Romancer, won the contest and gained a free trip to New York City and a spot in the US Air Guitar Regional Championship held on June 15.

The spoken word program encourages SU student poets to think, write and share original works.

Every week, for six weeks, a group of students gathered in the main lounge of Boland Hall, formed a circle and began to talk. They talked about anything — self-image, relationships, school, politics, social issues, life. Then, they used their spoken thoughts and crafted them into poems.

This year marks 30 years since the first official documentation of AIDS in the United States. People living with HIV or AIDS or involved with the cause in Syracuse share their thoughts on what has become of this disease nowadays.

Less activism, less media coverage, and AIDS patients looking healthy. Everything seems to indicate that AIDS is a disease of the past or belonging to a third-world country.

“People have become complacent. Now, the general consensus is that I’ll just take a pill and I’ll be fine,” said Joe Carpenter, who has been living with HIV for the last 28 years.

Twenty Syracuse University design students showcase collections created during the past school year at then annual VPA Senior Fashion Show.

Seniors from the College of Visual and Preforming Arts showed off their final projects in two fashion shows this year, including a matinee fashion show on April 28 and an evening performance on April 29. The event featured the designs on the 20 female graduating seniors.

A friendship between two Syracuse EMTs enables them to endure tragedies and threats during the overnight shift.

Despite feeling on the brink of madness at times, Casey White accepted that as a potential side effect of his career choice as an emergency medical technician at Rural/Metro Ambulance services.

As his movie opens nationally Friday, Sean McNamara shares the challenges of bringing Bethany Hamilton's story to the big screen.

Thirteen-year-old Bethany Hamilton was surfing with friends when a 1,500-pound tiger shark attacked her, biting off her arm.

In the years following Hamilton gained celebrity by adopting a positive attitude toward her personal tragedy and continuing to surf despite her handicap. In 2010 Hamilton ranked 20th on the Association of Surfing Professionals tour and won the National Scholastic Surfing Association competition just two years after losing a limb.

While the morning rush did not prove as hectic as expected, the popular Mexican chain saw crowds of customers throughout its opening day.

Tuesday’s snow and rain were not enough to damper the appetites of hungry customers who anxiously awaited the grand opening of the Chipotle restaurant on Marshall Street. This chain Mexican grill is known for its assortment of Tex Mex foods, such as burrito bowls, chips and guacamole. But they are famous for one thing in particular: their burritos.
