Without a signature win to its credit, SU is hoping for a strong push during conference play to bolster its tournament chances.

Since the Orange’s opening victory against Kennesaw State on Nov. 14, Syracuse head coach Jim Boeheim has repeatedly said his team has the potential and talent to win any game. All it needed was time, both for key underclassmen to find an offensive flow and the team’s confidence to return to a level not seen since last season’s 25-game winning streak.

But as the Orange’s second slate of Atlantic Coast Conference games began Saturday at Virginia Tech, that time officially ran out.

A disastrous turnover in the closing seconds gives the Wildcats an opening to capitalize.

After his final shot attempt bounced off the rim and onto the floor, Trevor Cooney looked toward the Syracuse bench and tried to cleanse his body of all frustration with a forceful F-bomb.

It was the vexation of making the right plays for more than 39 minutes and being on the verge of a statement victory over a ranked opponent, only to see it slip away in the final 17 seconds of regulation time.

Orange wins bizarre game on touchdown pass by Riley Dixon in double overtime.

Syracuse turned to an unlikely hero Friday night at the Carrier Dome.

After all, it’s not every day the punter throws an eventual game-winning touchdown on a fake field goal attempt.

Facing fourth and goal from the Villanova one-yard line in double overtime, punter and place-holder Riley Dixon connected with tight end Kendall Moore for a go-ahead touchdown. Moments later, Robert Welsh tackled Wildcat quarterback John Robertson on a two-point conversion attempt to help SU escape with a 27-26 victory.

Austin Wilson will lead the Orange offense in the second half.

Syracuse quarterback Terrel Hunt was ejected from Friday evening's season-opener against Villanova after throwing a punch at defender Dillon Lucas.

Hunt scrambled for a first down with 3:24 left in the second quarter when he was hit above the shoulders by Lucas. When both players landed on the turf, Hunt immediately clenched his left hand and struck the facemask of Lucas.

A Vine posting of the play can be seen here.

Villanova head coach ready to start season against Syracuse.

Andy Talley has won 204 games as the head football coach at Villanova University. But even after 29 years at the helm, he has no answer for the hostile environment that awaits the Wildcats this Friday night.

Talley spoke to the media Monday morning during the Colonial Athletic Association's weekly coaches teleconference. He spoke of the various challenges his squad will face during its season-opening clash with Syracuse.

After winning its third bowl game in four years, Syracuse will play some of the best teams in 2013, including Florida State, Louisville and Duke in the Carrier Dome.

The Orange look to build off a solid 2013 football campaign with a pretty tough 2014 schedule.

After year that saw 11 Atlantic Coast Conference (12 if your count the impending inclusion of Louisville in 2014) play in bowl games, the Orange face eight of them next season, according to the SU Athletic Department

SU plays its season opener against former Big East rival Villanova on Saturday August 30 in the Carrier Dome.

The sophomore center will need surgery to repair the injury to his left leg, according to head coach Jim Boeheim.

Despite remaining undefeated this season, Syracuse lost an important piece to its puzzle.

Sophomore center DaJuan Coleman, who has sat out the last three games with a left leg injury, will have surgery to repair that injury, forcing him to miss the remainder of the 2013-2014 season, according to head coach Jim Boeheim.

SU field hockey continues its fine play this season as Big East play begins against Villanova.

Syracuse's field hockey team — ranked No. 2 in the nation — opened up Big East play on Friday with a less-than-dominant 5-2 victory over the Villanova Wildcats.

Sophomore Lauren Brooks and junior Leonie Geyer each scored two goals in the game, and the Orange (6-0) held a 4-0 lead at halftime over the Wildcats (4-3).

The reigning Big East champions last saw Villanova in the Big East semifinals, where the Orange handily beat the 'Cats 3-0 behind goals from three different players, including All-American Kelsey Millman.

Syracuse loses its first ever Big East game to Villanova 11-10.

Syracuse (4-3, 2-1) fell to Villanova (5-3, 1-0) at the Carrier Dome on Sunday night 11-10. It was a slugfest between the two teams. The game was very physical and went back and forth. The Orange led for the majority of the first half but came out of the locker room sluggish and Villanova capitalized.

What to watch for as the Big East gets set for tip-off at its end-of-the-year tournament at Madison Square Garden.

The Favorite - Syracuse

No one in the Big East combines raw ability with length and athleticism like the Orange do.

The Dark horse - Cincinnati

The Bearcats have the guards to make a run and create mismatches with their small lineup.

Knocked out early - Notre Dame

Had a big win over SU, but ND relies too much on the long ball. If they're not falling the Irish will have a short stay in New York City.
