Students weather nights on the Quad for 8th annual Shack-a-Thon

The SU-SUNY ESF chapter of Habitat for Humanity aimed to raise $6,000 in this year's event.

The shacks in the pop-up neighborhood on the Quad last week may have attracted attention with wild decorations, but the small homes represented a much bleaker reality — 33.6 percent of Syracuse residents lived below the poverty level between 2008 and 2012, according to the U.S. Census Bureau.

Big Sean Returns to Syracuse

The rapper performed Friday, March 22nd in the Schine Underground as part of the Save The Horn Benefit Concert organized by the Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity and Habitat for Humanity.

Oh God! Rapper Big Sean returned to Syracuse University's Schine Underground Friday in front of a sold-out crowd. 

The brothers of Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity Theta Xi Chapter along with Habitat for Humanity brought Big Sean to Syracuse as part of the Second Annual Save the Horn Benefit Concert to benefit the Horn of Africa.

Big Sean, a member of Kanye West's G.O.O.D. Music group, hit the stage around 8:40 p.m. and performed for over an hour.

More than 2,000 students and local residents gather in remembrance of Martin Luther King Jr.

Students and members of the Syracuse community gathered together in the Carrier Dome Saturday to honor the legacy of Martin Luther King Jr. and local heroes of Syracuse.

More than 2,000 Syracuse University students and Syracuse residents gathered in the Carrier Dome Saturday for a night of inspiration and remembrance of Martin Luther King Jr. at SU’s annual Martin Luther King Jr. Celebration.

This celebration is a Syracuse tradition that has endured for over 25 years. The university welcomed Roslyn Brock, the chairman of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People, or the NAACP, as the keynote speaker for the evening.

Dancing For development

Syracuse University students danced the night away to help raise funds for Habitat for Humanity.

In the brightly-lit Sky Barn on South Campus, two girls toss around a balloon to each other, anticipating the arrival of students. A disc jockey sets up his equipment at the front of the barn, facing the dance floor. Balloons and streamers line the sides of the walls, and snacks donated by Pepsi are spread out on a table in the back. Everything needed for the dance is set, including several gallons of ice water, because this isn’t a typical dance — it’s a 12-hour dance marathon.

Raising the roof at Shack-A-Thon

Habitat for Humanity hosted the annual event to raise awareness for affordable housing in Syracuse and around the country.

The Syracuse University Quad teemed with activity Wednesday afternoon as Habitat for Humanity kicked off its annual Shack-A-Thon fundraising event. 

“It’s our biggest event of the year,” event co-coordinator and SU sophomore Maureen Finn said. “Everyone is really into it, and especially this year we didn’t start getting orgs until three weeks ago, so this is incredible that they will come out in that short of a time and be fully staffed for three days.”
