Locals celebrate Earth Day with a music and arts festival

A sustainability-themed music and arts festival brought people together to celebrate Earth Day on Sunday.

Earth Day is an annual event celebrated on April 22. Events are held worldwide in order to show support for environmental awareness and protection. This holiday is important to our community and our world, as the global temperature continues to rise and species continue to go extinct.

Syracuse residents raised awareness with Earthfest, a sustainability-themed music and arts festival celebrating Earth Day in Thornden Park Amphitheater on Sunday.

23rd Westcott Street Cultural Fair celebrates historic neighborhood

A lack of sunshine couldn't dampen the storied Westcott neighborhood's unique offering of food, art and culture.

For Westcott residents and neighbors, overcast skies and a lack of sunshine couldn’t put a damper on the 23rd iteration of the Westcott Street Cultural Fair.  Despite the miserable weather, the people, food and vibrant culture of the historic Westcott neighborhood seemed to shine even brighter.

“What makes Westcott unique is the mix of different people that we have here. The energy and the activism of the neighborhood that you won’t see anywhere else,” said Marcellus resident Sondra Bromka.

Sunday, April 21: Day Three

11 a.m.: I sleep in for the longest on Day 3, probably because I’ve been overexposed to the sun for the last 48 hours, jet-lagged, and finally adjusted to the desert nighttime and camping lifestyle conditions… too bad it’s all going to be over soon.

2 p.m.: Coachella Art Studio sponsored by The Coachella Valley Art Scene During the day I managed to check out the Coachella Art Studio on the camping grounds, about a five-minute walk from our campsite.

Saturday, April 20: Jour Deux

10 a.m: I can’t manage to sleep in any later. Damn it’s hot, but I’d rather be in dangerously high temperatures than back in Syracuse.

Things accomplished: My first shower in the campsite showers was way cleaner than expected. Although there was a VIP Shower option for $10, my camping neighbor Ana and I decided that it was worth it to just wait it out for the free showers since other girls leaving the area said it wasn’t so bad. Felt very refreshed and ready for the second day of the festivities.

Review: The Disco Biscuits' 10th annual music festival sold out this year because fans cared enough to make the trip.

Not everyone likes or even respects jam bands. The golden age of acts like the Grateful Dead or Jefferson Airplane are for the most part, gone, replaced by the followings of moe., Phish, or the Disco Biscuits.

The Disco Biscuits' sold-out, 10th festival in Mariaville, NY — 12 miles from Schenectady — drew flocks of hippies and drug-addled electro-nuts by the thousands this past weekend.

The downsides to summer music festivals become more apparent at the electronic/jam band event.

While Camp Bisco X's first day presented unmatched excitement and the thrill of attending a three-day summer concert, Day Two disillusioned us. The sets we saw still drove through jamming and electronic sweetness, but overpriced food, sound issues, high-anticipation and muddy conditions put a damper on the day.
