Rece Davis, Jalen Rose, Digger Phelps and Jay Bilas pumped up a crowded SU student section eight and a half hours before the Orange take on Duke at 6:30 p.m.

If the Syracuse-Duke game Saturday night is the main course, than ESPN College GameDay was the appetizer. Hundreds fans packed the stands behind the GameDay desk, cheering and screaming with signs and banners, creating one of the loudest and entertaining atmospheres on ESPN's weekly college basketball morning show.

"I don't know how many people there were," Jay Bilas said after the show, "but there were a lot."

The No. 2 Orange host No. 17 Duke Saturday in a match-up of perennial basketball powerhouses.

It’s the game most basketball fans have waited for since Syracuse first announced it was joining the ACC in 2013.

Friend versus friend. Boeheim versus Krzyzewski. Syracuse versus Duke.

Between the coaches, there have been over 1,800 wins, five NCAA Division I National Championships, and two gold medals in the last two summer Olympics.

But on Saturday, the two long-time friends will be on opposite sides of the court for the first time since Duke knocked Syracuse out of the Sweet Sixteen in 1998. The Blue Devils bested the Orange then, 80-67.

Coach Jim Boeheim credited the win over the ACC foe to the Orange’s nonstop effort on defense.

When it came to the ACC, the Orange knew it would have to compete with plenty of new faces. But the big question was how it would fare against the conference’s blue blood programs.

On Saturday, the No. 2 Syracuse (16-0, 3-0) passed the first of those tests with authority, defeating North Carolina (10-6,0-3) 57-45.

In a highly anticipated ACC-Big East match-up, Trevor Cooney, Tyler Ennis and C.J. Fair carried the Orange to its biggest victory of the season.

For the first 10 minutes of Saturday's game, No. 2 Syracuse (12-0) did not look like the second-best team in the country. Slow and sloppy, SU was out of sync on both ends of the court and the Orange even managed to accumulate seven team fouls in only seven minutes.

The No. 8 ranked Wildcats (11-1), on the other hand, came out swinging.

Villanova started out strong, playing a quick and clean game. The smaller but more agile Wildcat offense skirted Syracuse’s famously tall, zone defense, and four out of 'Nova's first five baskets were three-pointers.
