The Battle for the Schwartzwalder Trophy Friday will come down to the performance of the secondary against West Virginia's star quarterback, Geno Smith. Luckily for SU, Kevyn Scott leads the group.

The plot was familiar to Syracuse fans except for some minor changes.

This time, the quarterback was Toledo's Austin Dantin, not Wake Forest's Ted Stachitas. The interception was a leaping grab near the right side of the end zone, not a diving grab to snare the ball at the 32 of the opposition. The game was in overtime, as opposed to the final minutes of the fourth quarter.

Nick Bedbury of Syracuse and Emily Piza-Taylor of Binghamton take wins in first Empire State Marathon on Sunday.

Saturday night’s gusty winds calmed before sunrise Sunday morning, much to the relief of runner Jeff Ward. At mile seven of the inaugural Empire State Marathon, the rising sun began to light to road before the 25-year-old.

“It’s good timing in the fall, but yesterday I wouldn’t have said the same thing,” he said. Even with 19.2 miles ahead of him, Ward seemed chipper and relaxed.

One of 2,550 registrants for Sunday’s races, the Central Square native “came home” from Baltimore to race in his eighth marathon. Five countries and 33 states were...

Syracuse University hosted its annual Midnight Madness event Friday, effectively kicking off the 2011-12 seasons for the men's and women's basketball teams in an event that certainly didn't disappoint.

You can breathe now. The start of the college basketball year finally kicked off Friday night with Midnight Madness.

Syracuse University hosted the event at the Carrier Dome where both the men and women’s teams displayed their talents along with many past players. The highly anticipated night marked the first time the men's and women's teams took the floor since heartbreaking postseason losses last spring.

Midway through the 2011 football season, Syracuse sits in prime position for another bowl-worthy season.

This year's Syracuse football team can be described simply as heart-stopping.

Just look at the evidence. Throwing out a loss at Southern Cal, three games have gone to overtime, another came down to the final play, and the fifth required a Phillip Thomas interception with 1:36 remaining on the clock. It's been a roller-coaster season full of touchdowns and turnovers, upsets and nearly devastating losses. Here's Newshouse's recap of the Orange's season thus far.

The Syracuse quidditch season kicked off this past weekend with a loss against RIT. But their spirits remain sky high, even though they can't fly on those broomsticks.

Senior Drew Shields was one of the founding members of the Syracuse quidditch team in the spring of 2009. But it wasn’t Shields’s idea. His friend started playing to impress his girlfriend.

News and notes from Syracuse's 37-34 victory against Tulane.

The Syracuse Orange made things exciting, defeating the Tulane Green Wave with a last-second field goal, 37-34. Courtesy of the Tulane Athletic Department, “We didn’t win big but we won. So it’s a great feeling.” -Antwon Bailey.

Despite the loss of Chandler Jones, the defensive end corps continues to make big plays. Now, as Jones returns to the practice field, the unit looks to become the strength of the Syracuse defense.

Going into this season, junior Chandler Jones was the player to watch on defense. After all, Jones was coming off a season with 57 tackles, four sacks and three forced fumbles. With five tackles and half a sack against Wake Forest, it seemed like Jones would pick up right where he left off.

Missteps and mistakes rule the day for Syracuse football as the team drops its first game in Big East Conference play, 19-16.

The game started ominously for the Syracuse University football team when Antwon Bailey, the running back who had been downright dominant against Toledo last week, fumbled on the opening offensive play of the game.

Though there would be some bright spots during the day, it was the miscues—a blocked extra point and field goal attempt, three interceptions, including one near the goal-line, and a game-ending fumble—that defined the Orange’s play Saturday.

As Syracuse prepares to start conference play against Rutgers Saturday, the program needs to deal with a laundry list of injuries.

Chandler Jones is known as a playmaker, a leader and the best player on the defense side for the Syracuse football team. This year was supposed to be the year the defensive end solidified his draft status, and helped lead a younger defense that lost two of its linebackers to the NFL.

Shamarko Thomas is a feared player in the secondary, someone who’s known for having a knack for collisions. The safety was supposed to be a major part of the defensive backfield, combining with Phillip Thomas to bring down ball carriers all across the field.

Toledo pushed Syracuse to the brink of an upset Saturday, but the Orange secured the victory in overtime, 33-30.
