No Doubt: Syracuse takes down Notre Dame to reclaim the top spot

The SU men's lacrosse team handed Notre Dame its first loss of the season Saturday, in the form of an 11-8 setback. The win put the Orange in position to win the Big East and lock up the No. 1 seed in the upcoming NCAA tournament.

Syracuse used offensive creativity and great goaltending to defeat No. 1 Notre Dame, 11-8, Saturday, in a front of 14,751 fans. Senior attacker Stephen Keogh scored four goals for SU and senior goaltender John Galloway stifled Notre Dame with 12 saves.

“We’re out there having fun and it’s showing,” senior midfielder Joel White said.

Resilient SU gymnast competes one-handed

Teammates, coaches and friends marvel at SU sophomore Casey Lesieur's motivation and seemingly effortless routines since injuring her wrist four years ago.

Round off. Back Handspring. Back Layout Double Full — a routine sequence for a gymnast and a routine sequence for Casey Lesieur, who executes it flawlessly. The only difference between Lesieur and most gymnasts is that this athlete only has the use of one arm.  

During the milliseconds her body is in flight, Lesieur keeps her right arm close to her body, while her left arm extends, as it should, to maintain her balance and then support her quick descent.

SU football players enjoy finale for spring practice

The White squad beat the Blue squad Saturday in the Syracuse football Spring game, 13-7, in part to a one-yard touchdown run by tailback Antwon Bailey.

Syracuse head coach Doug Marrone decided to bring a change to this year’s spring game, which is normally just a scripted, glorified scrimmage. Instead, Marrone split his coaching staff and team into two and spent his time observing the two squads from about 15 yards behind the line of scrimmage.

Orange football team gets set for spring

For the first time in 20 years the SU football will be split in to two separate squads. Here’s how the team is shaping up for its game on Saturday, April 16 in the Dome.

Offense

Quarterback - Senior Ryan Nassib has clearly locked up the starting spot with a solid performance throughout spring practice. There is still some concern about overthrowing his receivers, something he has done regularly during practice, but that chemistry should develop before next fall.

Women's lacrosse rolls past Notre Dame, 12-7

Syracuse used a big offensive spurt to turn a 3-2 deficit into a 12-6 lead and then easily held on to beat the Notre Dame Fighting Irish Sunday at the Carrier Dome, 12-7.

The No. 13 Syracuse women’s lacrosse team improved to 5-6 on the season and 3-0 in the Big East after a 12-7 victory against the Notre Dame Fighting Irish Sunday at the Carrier Dome.

Bright Future: Freshman Maddie Kobelt having stellar first season

Freshman Maddie Kobelt has quickly established herself as one of the premier players on the court for Syracuse. She has amassed a 13-4 record at the No. 2 singles spot, and also competes with the No. 1 doubles team.

Talent alone doesn’t make someone a star, though SU freshman tennis player Maddie Kobelt certainly isn’t lacking it. Being a tennis ace, also requires determination, hard work, intelligence, and a positive attitude, all of which Kobelt possesses.

“Maddie is a goofball with a warrior mindset,” Orange head coach Luke Jensen said. “She’s fun to be around but zeroes in on the competition as soon as the match starts.”

Rockets edge Orange in overtime thriller

After leading most of the game, Syracuse fell to Toledo in overtime of the quarterfinals of the WNIT Sunday, 71-68. The game was played on the Rockets home floor.

The Syracuse Orange came up just short against the Toledo Rockets in a hard-fought overtime loss in the WNIT quarterfinals, 71-68, to end its 2010-2011 campaign. SU freshman Rachel Coffey attempted an off-balance 3-pointer as time expired, but it rimmed out.

SU women advance to quarterfinals of the WNIT

Syracuse used a late run to pull away from Eastern Michigan Thursday night at the Carrier Dome. With the win, the Orange advance to the quarterfinals and will play at Toledo Sunday.

The Syracuse Orange used a 12-2 run in the final minutes of its third round WNIT game to beat the scrappy Eastern Michigan Eagles. Iasia Hemingway led the way for the Orange with a career-high 29 points in addition to 10 rebounds and five assists.

Golden Eagles send Orange packing

Marquette hit a go-ahead 3-pointer with less than 30 seconds to play, and the Golden Eagles defeated Syracuse for the second time this year to end SU's season and advance to the NCAA's Sweet-16.

Freshman guard Dion Waiters scored a career-high 18 points, but it wasn’t enough as the Orange were upset by 11-seed Marquette, 66-62, ending Syracuse’s season.

SU was hampered by 18 turnovers and six charging calls on offense. Marquette used heavy pressure to prevent the Orange from running their offense, and Syracuse struggled to find any sort of offensive rhythm.

The loss of sophomore Brandon Triche didn’t help the Orange either. Triche landed flush on his back after going up for a lay-up in the second half and never returned to the game.

Syracuse's superior size out-muscles 14-seed Indiana State Friday in the second round of the NCAA Tournament, setting up a Sunday showdown with Big East foe Marquette.

Since the Syracuse Orange's disappointing loss to the Butler Bulldogs in the third round of the 2010 NCAA Tournament, the Syracuse Orange believe they have to make up for lost time. In fact, “Unfinished Business” has been the team’s mantra for the season to serve as a reminder of the goal at hand: a national championship.
