Eat this, not that: Marshall Street Edition

Beat the unhealthy habits of the winter blues by swapping out your usual "M" Street snacks with more nutritious alternatives.

Have you been packing on the pounds this winter? A Gallup poll conducted in 2011 found that Americans tend to exercise less and eat unhealthier foods when it's cold outside. Get out of your unhealthy slump this winter -- if not by getting your butt to the gym -- by swapping your favorite Marshall Street foods for alternate, healthier options.

Varsity smacks down against Cafe Kubal

Pizza:

Varsity: Cost of one slice =  $2.38

Cafe Kubal: Cost of one pizza = $5.94

Varsity and Acropolis might best satisfy a Saturday night's drunk pizza craving, but what about the longing that creeps up on cold afternoons when all you want to do is cuddle in your bed and watch re-runs of your favorite show? We all know the feeling. You've had a great morning workout and don't want to waste all your day's efforts by chowing down on the 500+ calorie piece of doughy, cheesy pizza you crave so much. (One slice of the Varsity-comparable white pizza at Sbarro clocks in at 570 calories, 23g fat, and 59g carbs.) How do you satisfy that yearning without feeling like a greasy mess?

Enter Cafe Kubal's personal-sized pizzas. Loaded with kale, sweet potato, bacon, and gorgonzola, this pizza wakes up your tastebuds and gives you nutrients you won't get from Varsity. One cup of kale contains more than a day's worth of vitamins A, C, and K. Grab a big coat and a friend and split one of these babies between the two of you. And well, if you end up eating one all on your own... There's no harm in that either.

Breakfast sandwich and coffee:

Starbucks: Sausage and cheddar classic breakfast sandwich: 500 calories, 28g fat, 41g carbs -- cost with flavored grande latte = $8.99

Dunkin' Donuts: Turkey sausage breakfast sandwich: 390 calories, 17g fat, 35g carbs -- cost with grande latte = $7.29

Many people go straight to Starbucks when they need help waking up in the morning, but there are healthier options  around the corner. Start your day off on the right foot with a Dunkin' Donuts turkey sausage breakfast sandwich. The Dunkin' Donuts sandwich saves you over 100 calories and 10g of fat with virtually identical ingredients as the Starbucks sausage and cheddar classic breakfast sandwich.

If you're feeling particularly healthy, try Dunkin's egg white turkey sausage flatbread, which contains only 280 calories, 8g of fat, and 32g of carbs.

Sandwiches

Jimmy John's: #16 Club Lulu: 755 calories, 33g fat, 67g carbs -- cost = $8.50

Roly Poly: #39 Turkey Applejack: 638 calories, 24g fat, 60 carbs -- cost = $8.91

Roly Poly and Jimmy John's both have their own take on the bacon and turkey breast sandwich. Don't be put off by the duller appearance of Roly Poly's play on the basic sandwich though. Not only does this wrap save you over 100 calories and almost 10g of fat, it is also served warm and toasted with a side of spicy honey mustard. Plus, this pressed wrap is packed with unconventional flavors: Sweet apple butter compliments the bacon's saltiness and the pesto-mayonnaise adds another layer of flavor. So ditch the popular-yet-bland flavors of Jimmy John's sandwich and enjoy a healthier, more flavorful version instead.
