If Syracuse wants to make it all the way to New Orleans for the Final Four, then they'll have to get by these teams

On Sunday, 68 teams were fortunate to make the esteemed NCAA tournament. As expected, the Orange was awarded a No. 1 seed in the East region.

Let’s take a look at who SU could potentially matchup against in the East and how much of a threat they are to end the Orange’s magical season.

16 Seed - UNC Asheville

The Scoop - A 16 seed has never beaten a 1 and this game won’t change that. UNC Asheville has good guards and gave the UNC Tar Heels a run for their money in the first half, but Syracuse is just too talented.

What to watch for as the Big East gets set for tip-off at its end-of-the-year tournament at Madison Square Garden.

The Favorite - Syracuse

No one in the Big East combines raw ability with length and athleticism like the Orange do.

The Dark horse - Cincinnati

The Bearcats have the guards to make a run and create mismatches with their small lineup.

Knocked out early - Notre Dame

Had a big win over SU, but ND relies too much on the long ball. If they're not falling the Irish will have a short stay in New York City.

A last second West Virginia missed 3-point attempt proved to be the difference in the Dome on Saturday.

With No. 4 Syracuse’s depth and balance, it seems a different player steps up each game. Saturday, it was Brandon Triche’s turn. The junior guard scored 18 points, including two game-winning free throws with about 88 seconds remaining in the game. Despite rebounding issues and some late-game drama, the Orange (22-1, 9-1) were able to escape with a 63-61 victory over West Virginia (15-7, 5-4) in front of 28,740 fans at the Carrier Dome on Saturday.

Under the lights of national TV, Syracuse shocks No. 11 West Virginia in the Carrier Dome, 49-23. The win secures the second consecutive Schwartzwalder Trophy for SU.

It was completely illogical. That’s the best way to describe what happened in the Carrier Dome Friday night because the outcome was something no one could have predicted.

Syracuse loses on the road against West Virginia, ending a four-game winning streak and placing them six points out of first in the division.

The Syracuse University women’s soccer team (6-5-3, 5-3 Big East) lost Sunday to the No. 22 West Virginia Mountaineers (11-4-0, 7-1-0 Big East) in Morgantown, W.V., 5-1. The loss snapped SU’s four-game winning streak, its longest of the season.

The offense, which scored multiple goals in three of its last four games, scored only once Sunday, a goal by forward Jenna Rickan in the 89th minute. Syracuse’s offense was only able to record six shots (four on goal) for the game.

Behind the aggressive play of sophomore guard Brandon Triche, Syracuse erased a four-point halftime deficit to blow past Big East foe West Virginia in the second half for a 63-52 Valentine's Day victory.

Facing a four-point deficit at the half, it seemed like the Orange were headed for their fourth straight home loss. That’s when C.J. Fair and Brandon Triche decided to take over. The duo sparked what may have been Syracuse’s best half of the season, and helped the Orange to a 63-52 win over West Virginia.

After losing three consecutive home games and two consecutive road games, the Orange are hoping to stop the bleeding Monday night as they host Big East rival West Virginia.

Following a disappointing loss to Louisville Saturday, Syracuse returns home to the Carrier Dome to play Big East foe West Virginia. The Orange are looking to pick up a home win for the first time in more than a month, since beating Cincinnati January 15.

After its 18-0 start to the season, the Orange (20-6, 7-6) have won only two of their last eight games. During this stretch, defense has been a major issue, as the Orange are allowing 11 more points per game than they did during their first 20 games.
