At least 200 Syracuse University students and faculty members gathered at the Life Sciences Complex to show solidarity for refugees.

When Nedda Sarshar graduates from Syracuse University in May, the odds of her parents seeing her lead the Class of 2017’s procession as Senior Class Marshal are unlikely. 

Her parents, who are Iranian refugees, will probably stay back in Canada, fearing what would happen to them if they tried to travel into the U.S. in light of President Donald Trump’s recent executive order on immigration.

“This s---, it’s going to get worse,” Sarshar said. “We keep resisting, never getting used to it. This is about standing up to hate.”

Fears of xenophobia, racism and deportation after the 2016 presidential election have prompted nationwide campus protests. SU and SUNY-ESF joined the movement yesterday.

A week after the 2016 presidential election, more than 1,000 Syracuse University and State University of New York College of Environmental Science and Forestry students gathered on SU’s Quad, joining the national "sanctuary campus" walk-out movement to protest the messages of President-elect Donald Trump.

A candlelight vigil was held outside Hendricks Chapel on Wednesday, Nov. 9, in response to the results of the 2016 presidential election.

The day after a surprising and upsetting presidential election for many on campus,  several campus organizations began offering various forms of support and recovery.

On Wednesday evening, Syracuse Uniersity and SUNY-ESF students gathered in vigil outside Hendricks Chapel with candles to "stand against hate."

The midday protest drew hundreds of onlookers to the university Promenade in an effort to challenge police brutality.

Syracuse University students staged a “Die-In” Wednesday afternoon at the Promenade where dozens of participants fell to the ground to raise awareness about recent police killings of unarmed black men across the country.

Starting at 12:30 p.m., the students laid still for 10 minutes to represent the fact that only 10 of the 102 cases of unarmed black people killed by police in 2015 resulted in officers being charged with a crime, according to a statement from organizers.

At least three Syracuse students took a knee during a pre-game national anthem last week.

Three Nottingham High School football players knelt during the national anthem before a game in Auburn last Friday, joining the silent protest started by Colin Kaepernick to raise awareness about injustices against people of color.

“We know what we stand for, or kneel for,” said senior linebacker Jakev Jackson, who raised his fist and bowed his head as three of his teammates knelt on the ground.

About 40 students will spend the night in the building's lobby.

Calling listening meetings inadequate, Syracuse University students have organized a sit-in at Crouse-Hinds Hall to demand that the administration address concerns related to diversity and transparency on campus.

About 40 participants will spend the night in the lobby of Crouse-Hinds, said Yanira Rodriguez, a PhD student in composition and culture, even though the building regularly closes at 10 p.m. Their goal is a written and verbal commitment from Chancellor Kent Syverud to address a 43-page list of grievances and demands, said geography senior Christine Edgeworth.

Students gathered together Monday afternoon to protest the position change of Department of Public Safety Officer Joe Shanley.

The voices of the Syracuse University community were heard at a rally held Monday afternoon on behalf of Former Cpl. Joe Shanley after the Department of Public Safety’s Law Enforcement and Community Policing Division modified his position.

More than 50 protestors expressed their support, gathering between Newhouse and Schine Student Center chanting Shanley's name and repeating “save Joe, don’t let him go.” Less than an hour after the protest concluded, DPS released a statement.
