Two second-half tallies help SU overcome rare goalkeeping mistake.

Battling a one-goal deficit early in the second half, No. 4 Syracuse rallied back to defeat Penn State, 2-1, in the second round of the NCAA Men’s Soccer Championship at SU Soccer Stadium on Sunday.

“To come back from behind and win shows a lot of character,” Syracuse head coach Ian McIntyre said. “I’m very, very proud of this group.”

The Orange (16-3-1) controlled the first half, keeping the ball in possession enough to fire eight shots while holding the Nittany Lions (13-6-1) to just one.

Alseth's first two career goals help SU outlast the Bison.

After 56 minutes of play at SU Soccer Stadium on Tuesday night, No. 5 Syracuse had only mustered a one-goal advantage against Bucknell.

But an unlikely offensive threat soon broke the game open.

Moving to America was difficult for freshman Emil Ekblom and Oyvind Alseth; but sharing a country, language and soccer helped them become playmakers for the Orange.

Syracuse’s men soccer team is a fairly young group this year, comprising of seven freshmen. Of those freshmen, two hail from Norway: striker Emil Ekblom and right fullback Oyvind Alseth.

Ekblom and Alseth have made promising starts to their Syracuse careers, starting in all games this season. Ekblom has three goals so far for the Orange, while Alseth tallied one assist. But beyond the matters on the pitch, integration was the first obstacle they both had to overcome.
