Jay Bromley

Jerome Smith, Jay Bromley and Marquis Spruill were among 13 SU football players who had one final shot to increase their draft stocks.

Jerome Smith walked out of Manley Field House Wednesday afternoon like he’d just scored the game-winning touchdown for the Orange. With beads of sweat dripping down his face, Smith smiled widely. After a sub-par NFL Combine in February, Smith had cause for celebration: he improved his 40-yard dash time by over two-tenths of a second—from 4.84 seconds to between 4.5 and 4.6 seconds.

Scott Shafer and company welcomed 22 new recruits on National Signing Day, as well as three 2013 signees who joined the team this January.

One week after head coach Scott Shafer concluded National Signing Day in 2013, he immediately looked toward the 2014 recruiting class.

His focus was to find high character young men who fit the SU system as well as balance out each position across the board.

“We really needed to find a balance,” Shafer said during a press conference Wednesday, “and we did that.”

The Orange contained the Minnesota offense and did not allow a 100-yard rusher for the 13th-straight game. But it was the touchdown from Hunt in the last minute of the game that sealed the win.

It was another defensive battle for Syracuse in Houston as the Orange pulled out a fourth quarter win over Minnesota on Friday, beating the Gophers 21-17 at the 2013 Texas Bowl to remain perfect in its two bowl games ever played in Texas.

“Well you know they say, ‘Don’t mess with Texas,’ well ‘Don’t mess with Syracuse in Texas,’ is what we say,” said Syracuse head coach Scott Shafer jokingly after the game.

With the game less than 24 hours away, the Orange are ready to show off the game plan they've been working on for the last three weeks.

HOUSTON - One day before his team takes on Minnesota in the Texas Bowl, Syracuse head coach Scott Shafer said the game is a great opportunity and achievement for the program.

“At the beginning of the season we had a lot of work to do,” Shafer said. “Just to be playing a game after Christmas is great. It makes me proud.”

And the players, including senior defensive tackle Jay Bromley are ready to get on the field after three weeks of preparation.

“We’re ready to get out there and show what we do,” he said.

The Orange won 34-31 in a back-and-forth game that ended with last second-touchdown from quarterback Terrel Hunt.

Syracuse will remember the 2013 football season as one riddled with missed opportunities, close losses and blowout ones, too.

But it will also be remembered for the final 34-31 come-from-behind victory over Boston College Saturday at the Carrier Dome, catapulting the Orange into bowl-eligibility.

At 5-5 on the year, Syracuse needed one win to become eligible for a BCS bowl game. But injuries and a sputtering offense derailed the Orange in a 17-16 loss.

When Syracuse's first drive against Pittsburgh started, the offensive line's run block looked strong. The Orange's first series lasted only ending with a 36-yard run by Jerome Smith in the first three minutes.

But then Sean Hickey went down with an injury and left the game, and the offensive attack began unraveling.

Terrel Hunt took over for Drew Allen early in SU's 54-0 victory over Wagner and immediately breathed life into a hapless Syracuse offense.

Three possessions, no first downs. The Syracuse offense started its home-opener much like it has all season: without much momentum or rhythm. But with the substitution of Terrel Hunt at the quarterback position, that all changed. Hunt’s first five possessions all resulted in touchdowns, as Syracuse routed Wagner 54-0 in Scott Shafer’s first career victory.

Syracuse finished with 597 yards, while only allowing 87, in a dominant win that was never truly in question.

SU couldn't overcome at a 34-7 haft time deficit, falling to the Wildcats, 48-27.

Senior quarterback Drew Allen threw four interceptions and Syracuse (0-2) fell to Northwestern (2-0) 48-27.

The Orange defense struggled early on and gave up a touchdown on the first drive of the game when Wildcat quarterback Kain Colter connected with junior running back Treyvon Green for a 8-yard passing play.

Nobody, not even SU defensive end Jay Bromley, thought he would become a football player. But after an unorthodox childhood, Bromley has fought his way to the top.

Jay Bromley is a senior and a starting defensive tackle on the Syracuse football team. But that's old news: he's started since his sophomore year.

He’s helped Syracuse in big wins: two Pinstripe Bowl victories — against Kansas State in 2010 and West Virginia in 2012 — and an upset win over then-No. 9 Louisville during homecoming last season. He is the only remaining starter from the 2012 defensive line, and he has become their leader.

But Bromley said his entire life's story defines him — not just football.
