Syracuse Orange faithful gathered hours before kickoff to grill, bounce and cheer their way to victory later in the Carrier Dome.

Fulfilling the traditions of fall weekend, thousands of Syracuse University football fans made their way Saturday to The Hill to cheer on the Orange. And sometimes what happens outside the Carrier Dome is just as exciting as what happens inside.

An announced crowd of more than 34,000 witnessed SU’s first win of the season against the Stony Brook Seawolves, following hours of music, refreshments and pre-game atmosphere that makes up  Saturdays.

Senior midfielder Jeff Gilbert's parents have missed only one SU home lacrosse game in the past four years.

Mary Ellen and Michael Gilbert have only missed one Syracuse University lacrosse match in the past four years.

But more than just being fans of the popular sport, the Gilberts are there to watch their son Jeff, a senior midfielder for the Orange.

“My parents have been at every game since my freshman year, except for one which they missed because they went to my brother’s college graduation,” Jeff said. “That’s an acceptable excuse.”

From the national anthem singers to hecklers in Otto's Army, SU's dominance in the sport draws die-hard fans and dedicated workers to the the Carrier Dome.

When the Syracuse men's lacrosse team takes the Carrier Dome field, it's almost guaranteed there will be thousands in the stands cheering for the Orange. 

So with a No. 1 ranking and another national title in sight, SU opened its season Feb. 20 against Denver with nearly 5,000 lacrosse-crazed fans eager to witness the Orange and Pioneer clash.

Watch the night inside the Carrier Dome unfold as Syracuse University makes history.

The numbers still seem astounding.

IWithin the Carrier Dome, 34,616 fans simultaneously cheered, screamed and let their Orange spirit explode for two solid hours Saturday night as Syracuse ripped Villanova  95-77.

Fans watched for 40 minutes as players battled on Jim Boeheim's court-- 10 guys sweating, bumping and fighting for control of the ball and the most baskets.  Two bitter rivals tangling for the top position in the Big East and top seed in the upcoming NCAA tournament.

A near capacity crowd turned out to watch the kickoff of the Doug Marrone era.

Doug Marrone's tenure as Syracuse University head football coach began Saturday against Minnesota, and the Carrier Dome was nearly packed with a reported crowd of 48,614.

After the recent disappointing seasons, fans were treated to a solid effort by SU, which led Minnesota 20-17 for most of the second half. Late in the fourth quarter Minnesota tied the game at 20, and ultimately won 23-20 in overtime.

SU's female basketball fans aren't all that different from the boys.

Kristin Petrella is a huge Orange fan. She might not paint her body blue and orange or get belligerently drunk before the game with a group of sports-crazed buddies, but she makes sure to support Syracuse University's men's basketball team in her own way.

Petrella was a cheerleader in high school. She attributes her over-abundance of school spirit to her years on the squad.
