Drew Allen

The Orange had no answer on defense for the Yellow Jackets triple option offense and couldn't respond with any offense, leading to the blowout loss.

Georgia Tech ran all over Syracuse on offense and shutout the Orange out on defense, leading to a 56-0 win Saturday.

Georgia Tech (4-3, 3-2) snapped a three-game losing streak by executing its triple option attack to perfection as well as making big plays on defense and special teams. It was clear from the start that Syracuse (3-4, 1-2) hadn’t seen anything like the triple option and head coach Scott Shafer acknowledged that fact after the game.

Quarterback Terrel Hunt was responsible for five touchdowns and the special teams forced four turnovers as the Orange dominated in a 52-17 victory over the Green Wave.

The Syracuse Orange became the 15th FBS program to win 700 games Saturday, beating Tulane 52-17. Terrel Hunt led the offense in his first career start, completing 16 of 21 passes for 175 yards and four touchdowns and running in another score.

“I thought Terrel played really well,” head coach Scott Shafer said. “If he stays in rhythm he’s pretty good.”

Hunt was especially on point in the first half, going 14-for-17 passing.

Terrel Hunt took over for Drew Allen early in SU's 54-0 victory over Wagner and immediately breathed life into a hapless Syracuse offense.

Three possessions, no first downs. The Syracuse offense started its home-opener much like it has all season: without much momentum or rhythm. But with the substitution of Terrel Hunt at the quarterback position, that all changed. Hunt’s first five possessions all resulted in touchdowns, as Syracuse routed Wagner 54-0 in Scott Shafer’s first career victory.

Syracuse finished with 597 yards, while only allowing 87, in a dominant win that was never truly in question.

SU couldn't overcome at a 34-7 haft time deficit, falling to the Wildcats, 48-27.

Senior quarterback Drew Allen threw four interceptions and Syracuse (0-2) fell to Northwestern (2-0) 48-27.

The Orange defense struggled early on and gave up a touchdown on the first drive of the game when Wildcat quarterback Kain Colter connected with junior running back Treyvon Green for a 8-yard passing play.

The Orange failed to capitalize on opportunities, eventually falling to Penn State in MetLife Stadium.

Drew Allen’s career at Syracuse got off to an inauspicious start on Saturday at MetLife Stadium when the first snap from scrimmage for the Orange was botched for a 3-yard loss.

Things didn’t get much better for Syracuse, either, as Allen completed just 16 of 37 passes in a 23-17 loss to the Penn State Nittany Lions (1-0) in the second New York’s College Classic.

Football beat writer Tom Rende tackles the question on everyone's mind: Will Terrel Hunt or Drew Allen start at quarterback?

Syracuse has had the luxury of avoiding a true quarterback competition for the past three seasons ever since ex-head coach Doug Marrone named Ryan Nassib the starter for the 2010 season. Those two remained at Syracuse for the past three season before departing for greener pastures in the NFL, but now Syracuse has a chance to move on, as well.

SU head coach Scott Shafer and PSU coach Bill O'Brien won't choose between each of their respective quarterbacks until just before the first regular season game at MetLife Stadium on Aug. 31.

With the first game of the season a little over a week away, both Syracuse coach Scott Shafer and Penn State coach Bill O’Brien are remaining silent on which quarterback will take the season’s first snap.

So far, it’s been a preseason cloaked in mystery for both the Orange and Nittany Lions.

A few key starters return, but a fierce five-way quarterback competition headlines the beginning of preseason.

With only 26 days left until the season opener at MetLife Stadium against Penn State, Syracuse’s first football season in the ACC is almost here. This season will also mark Scott Shafer’s first as a head coach. Since 2009, Shafer served as the defensive coordinator for the Orange. And last season, Shafer’s defensive unit ranked seventh in the nation.

“Everyone is going to be excited day one,” Shafer said. “It’s always fun when you open up camp because the kids are fired up and ready to go.”

Even with the addition of former Oklahoma Sooner Drew Allen, the quarterback competition is far from over.

When quarterback Drew Allen announced on Friday that he would be joining the Syracuse Orange, the former Sooner made it clear that he’s ready to come in and compete for the starting position.
