Increasing decline in student diversity reported at SU

The statistical decline in minority students at Syracuse University over the past two years could be representative of a larger diversity issue.

Syracuse University is home to more than 20,000 students with varying ethnic and religious backgrounds.

However, the university has seen a steady decline in diversity (by measure of statistics) over the past two years. Every ethnic background large enough to be recognized by the school, other than caucasians and international students, has decreased in population.

Actress Arden Cho discusses race and media representation with students

The former “Teen Wolf” star addressed Hollywood’s reluctance to cast Asian and Asian-American actors Saturday afternoon.

Growing up in Amarillo, Texas, Arden Cho often faced discrimination from her classmates and even her teachers. The bullying was so severe that she ended up in the hospital on multiple occasions after being beaten up, Cho said.

“Before I went to college, I used to think that being Asian-American was the worst thing that could have happened to me,” she said.

‘Black Mirror’ project reflects on lack of racial diversity in fashion media

A black model has recreated popular ad campaigns of some of the top models in the country.

How would you feel if you went to a job interview and after a few minutes the hiring manager says, “It was great speaking with you, but we already have someone of your race working here.” Ouch, right? That’s how New York City based model Deddeh Howard feels and that’s the inspiration behind her “Black Mirror” project.

Express SU forum invites students to voice their challenges and hopes for the campus

Students, administration, and faculty members gathered in Hendricks Chapel on Thursday afternoon to discuss issues about minority scholarship cuts, understanding diversity, and what it means to truly belong at SU.

Raising signs with messages such as “Why are we being ignored?” and “No decisions about us without us,” Syracuse University students led a silent but powerful protest on the steps of Hendricks Chapel before the 3:30 p.m. start of the university-organized Express SU forum Thursday. Their point was to show that although conversations about diversity and inclusion often take place on campus, actual concrete changes and solutions rarely take effect.

Re-negotiations in Posse Foundation scholarships prompt activism on campus

Starting in fall 2015, SU will reduce its number of Posse Foundation partner cities from three to one.

When Shelia Payton graduated Syracuse University in 1970, she left the campus she had called home for four years with mixed feelings.

“I had a great education. I learned a lot. It got me the career I wanted,” the 66-year-old alumna said. “But I never felt that I was part of the university.”

Despite the gloomy weather, people came together to commemorate the Hindu festival with bright powders.

Students didn’t let the gloomy weather stop them from lighting the sky up with a rainbow of colors on Sunday afternoon.

Students from all religions and cultures came together to celebrate Holi, a Hindu festival. While many celebrate the day for its fun atmosphere and playful background, the day also has historical significance.

Anderson Cooper on "finding your bliss"

Anderson Cooper never anticipated becoming a television anchor.

In fact, he’s suspicious of anyone who tells him that’s what they want to become.

“It’s like a kid who tells me they want to be a politician: I think you should be a real person before you become a fake one,” he said.

New Syracuse African American publication will arrive this spring

The Renegade Magazine will have stories affecting SU's African American community, including objectification of women, fashion and lifestyle trends.

With a story in mind, Ibet Inyang approached the editor-in-chief of a Syracuse University magazine who turned her away, saying the topic was too controversial.

Inyang wanted to write about natural hair, a growing trend in the African American community.

“I still don’t really get what she meant by ‘controversial,’ but at that moment I thought that there should be a campus magazine where a story like that can be published,” Inyang said.

Westcott Fair's 21st year celebrates diversity in Syracuse

Just a mile off campus, Westcott Street came alive on Sunday as the neighborhood's annual cultural fair ushered in artists, performers, restaurants and visitors from the surrounding area.

The 21st annual Westcott Street Cultural Fair awakened the surrounding neighborhood on Sunday, welcoming thousands of people of various ages and ethnicities to celebrate Westcott's diversity. 

The fair is a volunteer-driven effort organized by the Westcott Area Cultural Coalition, and the planning, “never stops,” Sharon Sherman, chair and treasurer of WACC, said. “It’s to celebrate this neighborhood,” she said. “I just like to see people happy, and with the fair, you see people from different walks of life coming together that I wouldn’t expect.”
