Aaron Sorkin won an Academy Award last year for penning the hit movie The Social Network. Thirty years earlier he was a musical theater student at Syracuse University.
On September 23, Syracuse's Not Another Theater Company will open their production of the play that skyrocketed Sorkin's career, A Few Good Men.
First produced on Broadway in 1989, most are more familiar with the 1992 film adaptation. A Few Good Men tells the story of two United States Marines put on trial for the death of a fellow Marine at Guantanamo Bay. The Navy lawyer assigned to defend them works to gain a plea bargain, in an effort to cover up the truth. When this doesn't happen, the lawyer and his defense team end up uncovering truths that they simply cannot handle. Based on actual events that took place in 1986, A Few Good Men is a compelling tale about honor and morality within the US Marine Corps and beyond.
A Few Good Men catapulted Sorkin into the public sphere and established him as a writing force in New York and Hollywood. The film rights were purchased before the play even premiered, which speaks to the power of the script. Directed by Rob Reiner (of The Princess Bride and When Harry Met Sally), it starred Tom Cruise, Demi Moore, and Jack Nicholson.
Now, Not Another Theater Company is undertaking the SU alum's breakout hit. Their production of A Few Good Men opens Friday September 23 and runs through October 1. Directed by Katie Lemos Brown and produced by Dustin M. Czarny, it stars Joel Miscione, Jesse Navagh, James Uva, Jordan Glaski, and Katie Deferio.
