SU's starting guard has cousins living here in Syracuse to support him on and off the basketball court this season.

Teams rise to the top of the polls with support.

As the Syracuse University men's basketball team currently plays as the nation's No. 1 team, senior guard Scoop Jardine knows all about support.

Most fans know Jardine is a cousin to fellow teammate sophomore Dion Waiters, but the senior guard also has two more cousins who moved to Syracuse during the past year.

With spiked hair and a hint of Mississippi mellow in his voice, grad student Brian Brister snagged second place and the crowd’s affection in the SU Idol competition.

Brian Brister hails from Mississippi where he attended William Carey University for mass communication and music. When he’s done at Newhouse, Brister says on his website he will pursue a career in fashion photography. The NewsHouse caught up with Brian to get an insider’s look at where he got those pipes.

Student participation in SA elections tops record high; voters pick Dylan Lustig for president.

This year, student participation broke the record with 26.1 percent of the students voting in the Student Association (SA) elections. Before this year, the highest percentage of participation had been in 2008 with 23.6 percent.

The Vineyard Church, a nationally recognized non-denominational church, holds services every Sunday night at Funk N Waffles.

While most students and residents in the Syracuse area spend Sunday nights preparing for the upcoming week, a group of about 29 churchgoers all attend mass -- at an underground waffle house. Each week, the Vineyard Church meets at Funk N Waffles at 6 p.m. to hold a more intimate and laidback service for worshippers.

Kickball has 1,000 grown-ups in sliding in the mud at Syracuse playing fields.

A hush falls over the team, the kicker steps up to the plate, there’s one kick and two steps before she’s down flat on her back in the mud.

Botched kicks are commonplace for the Syracuse Adult Kickball Association, SAKA, or the unofficial outlet for “unathletic people to get outdoors and stay in shape,” as Joanie Vecchiarelli, captain of the Recreational Hazards team calls it.

Journalist Bob Herbert advocated for building up the country's infrastructure, both literal and figurative, in Tuesday's University Lecture.

Before former New York Times columnist Bob Herbert spoke Tuesday night, he paused for brief introspection before sternly addressing the crowd at Hendricks Chapel.

“It’s customary to start a talk like this with a couple of jokes, but there’s nothing funny about what’s going on in the United States,” Herbert said.

The string quartet employed cutting-edge technology and experimentation at the Setnor Auditorium Wednesday night.

As part of a weeklong residency, the Kronos Quartet offered an exhilarating presentation at Syracuse University Wednesday.

SU professor Theo Cateforis, offered a preview before the presentation. He reviewed the quartet’s 30-year history and shared his personal memories with Kronos. He said he remembered when he first discovered the ensemble, hearing their performance of Jimi Hendrix’s "Purple Haze" in 1986.

“Kronos Quartet’s career can simply be called visionary,” Cateforis said.
