Mouth's Cradle

The student radio station’s first concert of the semester showcased three acts that played energetic but diverse sets

WERW’s first concert of the semester showcased three acts: Mouth’s Cradle, Guards and Class Actress.

Hip-hop, alt-rock, and synth-pop all found their onstage niche in the Schine Underground. While the artists represented a wide spectrum of styles, sounds and showmanship, they shared an enthusiasm and vigor in performance that made for a happy audience – from the eardrums to the dance floor.

Some SU scene movers and shakers offer their thoughts on a variety of year-end music topics.

We asked several musicians, promoters and writers to send us their five musical picks in whatever category they'd like. Here are the responses:

Though they're 200 miles apart, SU's rising hip-hop and electronic duo Mouth's Cradle prepares to drop a 15-track mixtape.

Hunched over a computer in his messy room filled with comic books, anime paraphernalia and empty mugs, Kevin Hegedus — tall, skinny and bespectacled — looked at his laptop. He clicked past folders and files like “Pokémon Sounds,” “Billy Budd,” “Desktop Clutter” and “Overflow Clutter,” trying to get to his latest e-mail from Brandon Linn, his musical partner-in-crime. Brandon — shorter, baby-faced and more than 200 miles away — had just spent hours in front of his Dell laptop and his electronic keyboard composing beats and samples to send to Kevin.

Review: Super Mash Bros. and Passion Pit stole the show from two much more deserving acts.

Lupe Fiasco was technically the headlining act of Juice Jam 2010, but when he finally took the stage after Passion Pit’s fanatically received performance, a quarter of the audience hightailed it to the exit. A few minutes later, when the rain began to pour, the audience that jumped along to Passion Pit’s bouncing beats dropped by half, leaving only dripping, diehard fans behind.

After seven years and several near misses, Juice Jam sells out once again.

At noon, a buzzing mob of 80 students, some sharing headphones, some giddily squealing for Passion Pit and Lupe Fiasco, crowded onto two well-worn yellow school buses at the College Place bus stop. The most aggressive ones pushed and shoved their way into seats – the rest were left behind in the early afternoon drizzle, wondering if the semester’s biggest campus concert was about to start without them.

You tweeted, we listened: a collection of student videos, photos and opinions. What did you think of the festival?

This year's Juice Jam boasted the largest crowd in the event's seven-year history. Five thousand students were on hand at Skytop on Sunday, and many of them took to the Internet to share videos, photos and memories of Lupe and the like. Below, find some of our favorites -- and don't forget to share your own in the comments!

The NewsHouse talks Pokémon and Passion Pit with eclectic Syracuse University hip-hop duo Mouth's Cradle.

It's been a whirlwind year for Syracuse's own Mouth's Cradle: In between recording their first full-length, The Next Big Thing, and jumping to the "New and Noteworthy" page on iTunes, the genre-morphing hip-hop duo somehow found time to open Juice Jam for Super Smash Bros., Passion Pit and Lupe Fiasco.

Brandon Linn (BLinn) and Kevin Hegedus (Mouf) were busy at Skytop on Sunday, as well, but The NewsHouse managed to snag a few minutes with them after their set.

Otto-Tune previews the annual back-to-school concert and names 10 tracks you must hear before you go.

Juice Jam 2010 sold out four full days before the annual back-to-campus show -- indisputable evidence, we think, that this year's line-up skews well above past offerings. Between the witty, genre-melding rap of bespectacled legend Lupe Fiasco and the dance-inducing synthpop of blogosphere faves Passion Pit, there's something at Juice Jam for everyone to love.

With Lupe Fiasco and Passion Pit headlining, SU's music festival looks solid, but not overly exciting.

I've been hyping myself about Juice Jam 2010 since June. It's like the off-season in any major professional sports league  - speculation about who's coming might be the most exciting part. Yesterday we finally found out:

Mash-up artists Super Mash Bros, homeschool dance tandem Mouth's Cradle, Passion Pit and advertised headliner Lupe Fiasco.

BLinn, the electronic spinner for Syracuse University rap/disco group Mouth’s Cradle, doesn’t even need the high-tech programs to compete with the hottest DJs on campus. While originally starting off by scratching vinyl records, BLinn is a full-fledged electronic mixer ready to take flight with rapping partner, Kevin Hegedus.
