"The Vagina Monologues" raises awareness of sexual violence against women

The Student Association for Sexual Safety and Empowerment put on its annual benefit performances of "The Vagina Monologues" on campus this weekend.

“Let’s start with the word ‘vagina”, begins Eve Ensler’s play, “‘The Vagina Monologues;’ “it sounds like an infection at best, a medical instrument maybe.”

Originally created as a celebration of vaginas and sexual empowerment, “The Vagina Monologues” has become a widespread art movement about ending sexual violence against women.

Mike Huckabee speaks on the future of conservatism

Former Arkansas governor, 2008 Republican Presidential candidate and current talk show host Mike Huckabee spoke on campus about his views on conservatism in America.

Mike Huckabee knew plenty of people at Syracuse University would disagree with his views. Yet the well-known conservative figure said that’s the reason he enjoyed speaking not just here, but at all college campuses.

At a past visit to Cornell University, where his hosts said 100 students were against his visit, Huckabee recalled asking to be dropped  off in front of the protestors. Much to their surprise, Huckabee thanked them for reminding him why he loves America, and felt the same way when visiting S.U.

Hundreds of young Syracuse women celebrated their acceptance Sunday into one of 11 Panhellenic sororities with cheering and dancing aplenty.

Dozens of women wearing red, white and blue knee socks twisted and stomped, dancing and shouting along to Miley Cyrus’s “Party in the USA.” One had fashioned a makeshift cape from an American flag; another darted around wildly with a smaller flag clamped between her teeth. They whipped around scarlet feather boas, chanting “U-S-A! U-S-A!” It was like an alternate-universe Fourth of July: about 60 degrees colder and a whole lot louder.

It was Bid Day at SU.

Students rally on behalf of Former Cpl. Joe Shanley

Students gathered together Monday afternoon to protest the position change of Department of Public Safety Officer Joe Shanley.

The voices of the Syracuse University community were heard at a rally held Monday afternoon on behalf of Former Cpl. Joe Shanley after the Department of Public Safety’s Law Enforcement and Community Policing Division modified his position.

More than 50 protestors expressed their support, gathering between Newhouse and Schine Student Center chanting Shanley's name and repeating “save Joe, don’t let him go.” Less than an hour after the protest concluded, DPS released a statement.

Students and members of the Syracuse community gathered together in the Carrier Dome Saturday to honor the legacy of Martin Luther King Jr. and local heroes of Syracuse.

More than 2,000 Syracuse University students and Syracuse residents gathered in the Carrier Dome Saturday for a night of inspiration and remembrance of Martin Luther King Jr. at SU’s annual Martin Luther King Jr. Celebration.

This celebration is a Syracuse tradition that has endured for over 25 years. The university welcomed Roslyn Brock, the chairman of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People, or the NAACP, as the keynote speaker for the evening.

Carnegie renovation to restore legacy

The Carnegie Library restoration project has been years in the making and will restore the building to its former magnificence.

When students think about Carnegie Library, most can probably identify it as the building on the Quad between the Archbold Gym and Bowne Hall. Perhaps they have taken a math course in the building or maybe they were one of the victims as freshmen who tried fruitlessly to open the “doors” on the top of the stone steps—only to realize that the doors are in fact, locked and you are now being watched by curious students in the classroom behind them.

Syracuse University offers a number of one-year Master's degree programs. Undergrad and graduate students alike share their thoughts on how to best experience Syracuse University in that short amount of time.

Syracuse University is known for having a number of Master’s degree programs that can be completed in one year or less. This appeals to many applicants who desire an advanced degree, but who are eager to join the work force, and don’t want to spend years toiling away in a classroom. But for some, there is a downside to these short programs of study. Some graduate students feel that while they are getting an invaluable education, they are missing out on the SU experience.

Setnor School offers conservatory environment for music students

SU's School of Music provides a serious education for dedicated musicians of all types.

Walking up the intricately carved wooden spiral staircases in Crouse College, one can hear the faint strains of organ music. Open the doors of Setnor Auditorium and there it is: the 3,823-pipe organ donated by John Crouse that was originally built in 1889. The organ and the auditorium itself are perhaps the most recognizable assets to the Setnor School of Music, but the school is home to professors and students who are truly passionate about music.

Students push for divestment from fossil fuel companies

A student campaign is urging the administration to avoid giving endowment funds to fossil fuel companies.

A divestment campaign has been pushed by students at Syracuse University to freeze out possible fossil fuel companies who have received money from the school’s endowments. The students are planning on working with Nancy Cantor to accomplish some form of independence from the fossil fuel industry.
