Six SU athletes medal in Big East indoor track championship

In the two day meet in New York City, the men's and women's track and field team finished sixth and ninth, respectively.

This weekend the Syracuse University men’s and women’s track and field team wrapped up its indoor season with the Big East Championships at the New Balance Track and Field Center at the Armory in New York City. The meet was a two-day event beginning on Feb. 16.

Six Syracuse athletes medaled at the championships, including Donald Pollitt who won the 60-meter hurdles with a time of 7.79 seconds, a personal record. Senior Amadou Gueve also medaled in the same event, finishing second with a time of 7.81 seconds Sophomore Darren McCluskey didn’t medal but also made the finals for the 60-mete hurdles, placing eighth with a time of 8.35 seconds. 

Junior Jaquan Holland finished second in the 60-meter dash with a time of 6.80 seconds. Sophomore Martin Hehir finished second in the 3000-meter race with a time of 8:04.33. Freshman Shania Harrison came in second place in the 60-meter dash with a time of 7.46 and senior Lauren Penney came in third in the 3000-meter race with a time of 9:24.46. Junior Sarah Pagano placed tenth in the 3000-meter dash in (9:42.16) , Junior Shaylyn Tutie, came in fourteenth (9:58.82), and Senior Breanna Symonial, was sixteenth (10:02.33)

Sophomore Jihaad Howard placed fourth in the 60-meter dash with a time of 6.83, he also placed fifth in the 200-meter dash with a time of 21.49.

Freshman Brianna Nerud placed sixth in the 100-meter run with a time of 2:50.28, and sophomore Maura Linde ran a 5:06.76 in the mile run, placing twelfth overall.

Senior Robert Molke placed eleventh in the 3000-meter run with a time of 8:13.91, junior joseph Whelan placed fifteenth with a time of 8:22.16, and sophomore Ryan Urie finished twentieth in 8:31.10.  Senior Erica Belanger also competed in the pentathlon placing eleventh with 3056 points. 

The men’s team placed sixth overall with 60 points and the women’s team placed ninth overall with 30 points. Connecticut won the overall men’s championship title and Georgetown won the overall women’s title with 142, and 141 points respectively.
