Field hockey: UNC blanks the Orange

SU offense struggles in first conference game of season.

Facing the nation’s top-ranked team, No. 5 Syracuse suffered its first defeat of the 2014 season after falling, 3-0, to North Carolina on Friday afternoon.

The Orange (6-1, 0-1 ACC) saw its six-game win streak snapped as the Tar Heels (5-0, 1-0 ACC) dominated SU throughout the 70-minute contest.

North Carolina goalie Shannon Johnson's four saves led the Tar Heels, who posted their first shutout since blanking SU in the 2013 ACC Tournament semifinals.

Syracuse junior goalie Jess Jecko saved six shots for the Orange, but allowed all three goals, including two in the first half to Loren Shealy and Charlotte Craddock.

Emma Russell and Laura Hurff recorded the only shots on goal for the Orange, with each posting two.

Syracuse continues ACC play next Friday against No. 15 Boston College at J.S. Coyne Stadium. Game time is set for 1 p.m.
