Orange Central event schedule to offer concerts, talks and more

Homecoming 2013 kicks off this week with events, lectures, food and fun for the entire SU community, past and present.

It’s that time of year again: the weather is growing cooler, the leaves are changing to brilliant shades of orange, red and yellow and campus will soon be flooded with alumni for Orange Central and homecoming weekend. Don't miss out on this year’s key events.

Slice of Orange Days

Sept. 30 and Oct. 1, 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Come to Schine Atrium for this free event. Enjoy games, food and prizes. Plus, find out who’s a part of the Orange Central Court.

Trivia Night

Oct. 2, 8 p.m.

 Show off your breadth of knowledge and the prizes could be yours. Enjoy free food in Schine 304s.

UU Presents Twenty One Pilots

Oct. 3, 7:30 p.m.

Twenty One Pilots will be performing in the Goldstein Auditorium this evening. The duo is an MTV “Artist to Watch.” Student tickets are $10 with SUID.

The Erie Canal and Its Engineering History

Oct. 4, 9 a.m.

Learn about the Erie Canal, the famous waterway that has transformed upstate New York. Professor Sam Clemence will share stories of this great American technology in 107 Hall of Languages. The event is free, but registration is required.

Arents Award Luncheon

Oct. 4, 11:30 a.m., doors open at 11 a.m.

Celebrate returning alumni as they receive the George Arents Award, which recognizes alumni who have distinguished themselves in their field. This year’s recipients are Taye Diggs ’93, Carole Swid Eisner ’58, Henry Grethel ’54, Sid Lerner ’53 and George Saunders G ’88. The event will take place in the Goldstein auditorium and costs $25. The Legacy of Pan Am 103 at Syracuse

Oct. 4, 3 p.m. to 4 p.m.

It’s been 25 years since Pan Am 103 exploded in flight from London to New York. Among the victims were 35 SU students studying aboard. Listen to a panel discussion of the tragedy and how it has impacted life at SU over the years.

Cooking with David Shalleck ’83

Oct. 4, 3 p.m. to 5 p.m.

Learn how to cook from SU alumnus David Shalleck, who has worked as a chef and culinary television producer for 20 years. The two-part event includes a cooking demonstration followed by a book signing. Registration is required, but the event is free.

‘Cuse Commotion Parade and Pep Rally

Oct. 4, 5:30 p.m.

Watch the SU marching band, cheerleaders, Otto and more as they make their way from Schine to Hendricks Chapel, where the parade ends with a pep rally and the announcement of the homecoming king and queen.

Orange Central Tailgate

Oct. 5, 1:30 p.m. to 3:30 p.m.

Get in the spirit before the big game. Grab some food on the Quad as you mingle with alumni.

Oct. 5, 3:30 p.m.

Bleed some orange and cheer on the SU Orange as they face the Clemson Tigers in their first ACC conference game at home. Purchase tickets at http://www.carrierdome.com/tickets/ or call 888-DOMETIX. ‘Cuse Carnival (Oct. 5, 9 p.m. to 12 a.m.) A carnival is taking over Schine Student Center. Come out for free food and games.

Pride Union Dance Party

Oct. 5, 11 p.m. to 2 a.m.

Dance all night in the Schine Underground. Tickets are available at the Schine Box Office.
