Kevin Drew [6] of the Syracuse University men's lacrosse team was charged early Monday morning with driving while intoxicated, performing a hit-and-run, resisting arrest, passing a stop sign, and speeding. A police officer witnessed a 2007 Chevy Trail Blazer hit a parked car on Broad Street in the Westcott area. When the driver failed to stop, the officer chased the car at speeds of 50 mph, well over the posted 30 mph speed limit. After eventually pulling over, Drew--the only person in the car--refused to comply with the police officer’s commands to step out of the vehicle with his hands up.
When he got out of the car, Drew assumed an “aggressive stance,” according to Officer John Gunsalus, who subdued Drew with a kick to the chest.
The vehicle Drew was driving is registered to lacrosse head coach John Desko [7] and normally driven by his son Tim Desko [8], who is Drew's roommate and a member of the lacrosse team. John Desko said neither he nor his son knew Drew had taken the vehicle.
Drew was also charged with leaving the scene of a property damage accident, failure to comply and unlicensed operation of a motor vehicle.
Drew enjoyed a breakout season last year in which he played in all 17 games as a defensive midfielder and totaled six goals, one assist, 33 ground balls and 11 caused turnovers. That performance landed him on the All-BIG EAST Second Team. This incident, however, has landed him in suspension and on the wrong end of the law.
Coach Desko issued a statement that Drew “has been indefinitely suspended from the lacrosse team.”
