Activist and media personality Marc Lamont Hill served as the keynote speaker for the 2016 Martin Luther King Jr. Celebration and highlighted activism and agency.

Marc Lamont Hill said it’s easy to share stories about injustice on social media, but taking action is necessary to see true changes in today’s society. The Morehouse College professor shared his thoughts on social justice movements with those in attendance in the Carrier Dome Sunday during Syracuse University’s 31st annual Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Celebration. 

“You can’t talk about Martin King and not talk about acting — acting bravely,” Hill said. “The biggest problem in the world today is that there are too many people that don’t do anything.”

Consulting firm Bain & Company highlighted the topic in a diagnostic report for SU in April.

When Syracuse University named Kelly Lux its first online community manager in 2010, Lux understood the expectations that came with the new position.

SU officials wanted her to start and build an online community with students and alumni through Twitter and Facebook. During her time in the position, her frequent activity on these channels led to an impressive growth of followers on SU’s social media platforms.

Local senior citizens and Renee Crown Honors students participated, side by side, in a social media class that used both Twitter and Facebook as a supplement to in-class teaching.

This fall Syracuse University students and local senior citizens enrolled in "HNR 360: Election and New Media" to learn about the impact of social media on political campaigns.

Any two people with a link to SU can connect over a thousand things. They've shivered through zero-degree days, spun orange bandanas over their heads in the Dome and wondered how it's possible for there to be snow flurries at an event called Mayfest.

They can also build a professional connection.
