Earthquake tremors rattle SU hill

An 5.0-magnitude earthquake near Ottawa, Canada, is felt throughout Upstate New York.

Sara Brodowski was typing away on her MacBook Pro in the S.I. Newhouse School of Public Communications' Collaborative Media Room when she noticed something out of the ordinary.

The media management graduate student's fingers were shaking on the keyboard, so she looked around to see what caused the commotion. 

"I thought it was someone stomping around," Brodowski said. 

But the real catalyst wasn't a rowdy student. It was an earthquake.

A tribute to Bill Glavin

The longtime magazine professor will forever be in the hearts of thousands of Newhouse students.

On Oct. 8, 2008, Bill Glavin shared this advice with the students in his critical writing course: when you write a profile about a person, you have to believe in that person. You have to know what makes them tick, what drives them, and you have to find what he called "the essence" of them.

I believe this about professor Glavin: as a teacher, mentor and friend, he found his way into the hearts of thousands and we are lucky to have known him.

Donny Deutsch to speak at Newhouse convocation May 15

Host of CNBC's “The Big Idea” to address graduates

CNBC's Donny Deutsch will speak at the S.I. Newhouse School of Public Communications convocation on May 15 at noon at the Carrier Dome. 

Deutsch, host of The Big Idea, is also the chairman of the ad agency Deutsch Inc. a top national advertising agency. Deutsch's clients include PNC Financial Services Group, Johnson & Johnson, DIRECTV, Volkswagen, Eastman Kodak Company and PlayStation.

Leibovitz wows, inspires with images

Famed photographer Annie Leibovitz shares favorites and insights in a packed Hendricks Chapel Thursday.

Vogue. Vanity Fair. Rolling Stone.

These are just a few of the magazines that have featured the work of  the acclaimed photographer and documentarian Annie Leibovitz. She has photographed the Queen and the first family. She has produced images that have become enduring cultural icons in modern America. The Library of Congress has labeled her a living legend.

And on Thursday, she inspired a standing-room only crowd at Hendricks Chapel.

Spotlight on sustainability: A bright hope for the Syracuse University campus or a fading dream?

All the buzzing widgets, blinking bulbs and electric air coolers in Newhouse I, II and III zapped through 150,200 kilowatt-hours of electricity last July. This is 7.5 times the energy consumed by the average automobile in the year 2000. It's 64 times the total magnetic field energy in all the magnets of the Large Hadron Collider, and 12 times the average yearly single-family home electricity usage.

Fighting for Free Speech

Mexican journalist Lydia Cacho receives the 2010 Tully Center Free Speech Award for her exposure of child pornography and sex trafficking in Mexico, despite the obstacles.

Lydia Cacho lives by this simple, direct motto: Tell the truth, no matter what.

For the Mexican journalist, telling the truth has led to death threats, abduction, torture, jail time, and years of court battles over her rights as a citizen and reporter. Yet Cacho continues to share her own story and those of victims of child pornography, trafficking, and abuse.

Cacho received the Tully Center for Free Speech Award Tuesday evening for her perseverance in fighting obstacles to free speech.

Arab-Israeli journalist speaks at Newhouse

Commentary: Khaled Abu Toameh spoke with grace and honesty about the Arab-Israeli conflict that affects people worldwide.

Khaled Abu Toameh spoke in the Hegenhan Auditorium in Newhouse III on Monday afternoon, drawing about 75 enthusiastic listeners. 

It was refreshing to hear a presentation about the Israeli-Palestinian conflict that seemed honest. Khaled Abu Toameh had a journalistic feel to the way that he spoke – he did not try to solve the problem of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict and admitted when he didn’t know the answer. In essence, he was a reporter on and off paper.

Newhouse Dean Lorraine Branham selects her namesake sandwich, the Bran Grilled Texas.

On Friday, Newhouse School Dean Lorraine Branham was recognized in a way that puts her in some elite company.  She was not awarded a Nobel Prize, or a Pulitzer.  She was not given an honorary academic degree.

Dean Branham had a sandwich named after her in Food.com.  Branham, who arrived at Syracuse University just more than a year ago, was given her choice of five sandwiches and in a rigorous taste test, selected the one associated with her previous home in Austin, Texas.
