Led by one of the nation's best players in goalkeeper Alex Bono, the Orange became a legitimate ACC contender.

Magical. Remarkable. Extraordinary.

Heartbreaking.

With a painful 2-1 overtime loss to Georgetown in the third round of the NCAA Division I Men’s Soccer Championship on Nov. 30, a monumental season came to a grinding halt for head coach Ian McIntyre and his Syracuse squad.

Two second-half tallies help SU overcome rare goalkeeping mistake.

Battling a one-goal deficit early in the second half, No. 4 Syracuse rallied back to defeat Penn State, 2-1, in the second round of the NCAA Men’s Soccer Championship at SU Soccer Stadium on Sunday.

“To come back from behind and win shows a lot of character,” Syracuse head coach Ian McIntyre said. “I’m very, very proud of this group.”

The Orange (16-3-1) controlled the first half, keeping the ball in possession enough to fire eight shots while holding the Nittany Lions (13-6-1) to just one.

Alseth's first two career goals help SU outlast the Bison.

After 56 minutes of play at SU Soccer Stadium on Tuesday night, No. 5 Syracuse had only mustered a one-goal advantage against Bucknell.

But an unlikely offensive threat soon broke the game open.

Sophomore Oyvind Alseth scored the first two goals of his college tenure in the second half to help the Orange pull away to a 4-1 victory over the Bison. With the win, SU became the first school to reach the 13-victory plateau this season.

A vaunted SU defense helps shut down the Tigers.

By Matthew Alexander

On a humid Saturday that saw temperatures reach 80 degrees, Syracuse was able to cool down a hot Clemson squad.

Coming into the day’s contest, the Tigers (3-4-0, 1-1-0 ACC) had won three straight and were riding high after a 6-0 blowout victory over Gardner-Webb on Wednesday. However, it was the Syracuse (6-1-0, 1-1-0 ACC) defense that stepped up, shutting out Clemson 1-0 and securing its first ACC win of the season.

Syracuse dominates Big Red for its fifth shutout of the season.

Cornell entered its matchup against No. 20 Syracuse with consecutive 1-0 wins over Binghamton and Lafayette, thanks in large part to a defense that had allowed only one goal all season.

However, Tuesday night was a different story. Syracuse had no trouble exploiting the back line of the Big Red and cruised to a 3-0 victory at SU Soccer Stadium.

Goals from Ekblom, Murrell and Perea lead SU to second victory.

Only two days after its speed was on full display, Syracuse showed it can also bring physicality to the pitch at SU Soccer Stadium.

In a game littered with chippy play, the Orange had enough finesse to convert three times offensively en route to a 3-0 victory over St. Mary's in the final game of the Central New York Soccer Classic on Sunday.

Syracuse (2-0-0) has now opened three consecutive seasons with a pair of victories.

The Orange could not overcome an early deficit, falling 4-1 to the Demon Deacons.

Syracuse dropped its final game of the regular season 4-1 to Wake Forest despite Emil Ekblom scoring his team leading 10th goal of the season.

Wake Forest claimed the lead halfway through the first half when Ian Harkes capitalized on the scoring opportunity to put the Demon Deacons up 1-0. Sean Okoli followed up a short time later to put his team up 2-0, a deficit that proved to be difficult for the Orange to recover from.

Sophomore goalkeeper Alex Bono juggles school work with a stellar performance as the last line of SU's defense on the soccer pitch.

Alex Bono found his love for soccer through his consistent preparation and drive to become the best goalkeeper on the field. A native of Baldwinsville, N.Y., Bono needed to immerse himself with a few years of playing sports before discovering which sport he preferred. And during the latter stage of his pre-teenage years, he found that sport to be soccer.

“It wasn’t until I was around 10 years old that I found soccer as my passion,” Bono said.

Neither team could find the back of the net until the 56th minute, when Maryland's Dan Metzger fired the winning goal for the Terrapins.

The Orange men's soccer team (9-5-1, 2-5-1 ACC) hosted No. 12 Maryland (7-3-5, 4-1-3 ACC) in a pivotal conference match-up Saturday. In the end, the Terrapins emerged with a narrow 1-0 victory, courtesy of UMD’s Dan Metzger.

Despite out shooting the Panthers 20-1, Syracuse finished in a scoreless 0-0 tie Saturday night.

The opportunities to capitalize on the scoring chances were endless for Syracuse. Facing winless Pittsburgh, the Orange continued to show its aggression as the opponent drifted into a passive state.

Unfortunately, the Orange (8-4-1) were unable to score the one goal needed to take down the Panthers (0-6-4), as the game ended at 0-0 in double overtime.

“All the chances we had, the ball just didn’t want to get in the back of the net today,” midfielder Stefanos Stamoulacatos said. “We had our chances.”
