Season highs included defeating the defending champions, but SU conceded 162 points in the last three games.

As of 3:20 p.m. on Nov. 25, Syracuse's football season was finished. In what could certainly be defined as a whirlwind two and a half months for the Orange, Syracuse University remained ineligible for postseason football.

Non-conference mediocracy

Going into Dino Babers' second year as head football coach, there was a lot of optimism in what was a difficult schedule on paper.

This marks the fourth-straight season SU has failed to reach a bowl game.

In the final home game of the season, Syracuse showed few signs of life as it was beaten by Boston College 42-14, finishing the season on a five-game losing streak.

With Syracuse quarterback Eric Dungey out and backup Zack Mahoney suited up for his final game, it appeared that it’d be all set for the senior from LaGrange Park, Illinois to have one last chance of glory. And while he did see playing time, it was a lot less frequent.

Syracuse (4-4, 2-2 ACC) brought it within one, but couldn't respond to a late Miami touchdown.

MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. - After beating No.2 Clemson last week, Syracuse on Saturday fell short under cloudy skies and humid air to the Miami Hurricanes 27-19.

The Orange struggled in the offense in the first half as quarterback Eric Dungey turned the ball over on the first possession. Defensive lineman Demetrius Jackson caught the first pick, however had the ball stripped by Dungey. This second change of possession gave Syracuse a new set of downs, however they couldn’t gain on the momentum.

The Orange never trailed against the defending National Champions, outlasting them 27-24.

When the defending champions came to the Carrier Dome Friday night, Syracuse football was ready.

As families descended on the hill and packed the stadium, fans didn't know what to expect. A week after a 27-24 win against Pittsburgh, many didn't know if they would have similar success against a much more competitive team.

But Syracuse head coach Dino Babers and the other 128 members of his team did.

October 7, 2017 - 6:52pm
In front of over 33,000 fans, Syracuse was winning most of the second half.

Eric Dungey threw two touchdown passes and ran one in himself, finishing with a total of 413 yards. Syracuse’s (3-3, 1-1 ACC) defense kept Pitt (2-4, 0-2 ACC) from converting a third down until the fourth quarter, finishing 3-of-13, and the Orange beat the Panthers 27-24 Saturday afternoon at the Carrier Dome.

Syracuse’s win over Pitt is its first in five years. The Panthers were 4-0 against the Orange since both joined the ACC in 2013 and had won 11 of the last 12 meetings between the two.
