Men's soccer: Perea's tally lifts Orange past Akron

The senior's goal with three seconds remaining leads to exhibition win over the 2010 national champions.

Syracuse played its final exhibition game of the 2014 preseason Friday evening, and it waited until the final moments to strike.

With only three seconds remaining, Orange midfielder Nick Perea shoveled a loose rebound past goalkeeper Jake Fenlason to send SU to a dramatic 2-1 victory over No. 13 Akron at FirstEnergy Stadium-Cub Cadet Field.

After a scoreless first half, Emil Ekblom converted in the 51st minute to give Syracuse an early lead. However, Akron's Saad Abdul-Salaam answered in the 75th minute by sending a screamer off the hand of SU goalkeeper Alex Bono and into the net.

The Orange applied plenty of pressure in the final minutes, but could not muster a goal... or so it appeared.

Enter Perea, who found a loose ball off a shot from Oyvind Alseth and spotted just enough room to send it past Fenlason for the deciding tally.

Bono made four saves for the Orange, including a diving stop in the 79th minute. Syracuse has now won seven straight exhibition games.

Syracuse opens the regular season Friday, Aug. 29, against the Niagara Purple Eagles at the SU Soccer Stadium. Kickoff is scheduled for 2 p.m.

Men's soccer: Orange pulls away from Hartwick

Three goals during the final 20 minutes propel SU to easy exhibition win.

It took Syracuse a long time to build any sort of advantage during Saturday's rainy exhibition match against Hartwick.

But once it finally did, the Orange couldn't be stopped.

Noah Rhynhart broke a 1-1 deadlock in the 71st minute, and SU added two more insurance goals late to post a 4-1 victory over the Hawks at the SU Soccer Stadium.

"To get that first game out of the way was good," Orange head coach Ian McIntyre told Syracuse Athletics. "Our performance grew stronger as the game wore on, and some of our guys coming off the bench really gave us a lift."

The Orange took an early lead 34 minutes into the contest on a penalty-kick goal by Julian Buescher. However, Nick Hillis brought the Hawks even early in the second half.

The score remained tied until Rhynhart found an open shot off a rebound and buried it for the eventual game-winner. Mike Koegel and Stefanos Stamoulacatos punched home the other goals for SU.

Syracuse goalkeepers Alex Bono and Matt Stith combined for three saves.

The Orange is 8-1 in exhibition matches since 2011. It faces Akron this Friday at 7 p.m. in another friendly.

Making the Rinds: Notes from the court and pitch

SU hoops battles Bears, men's soccer receives votes and volleyball spikes across campus.

Syracuse will have to repeat some of its Maui magic to win the 2014 2K Classic.

The Orange's first opponent in the annual men's basketball tournament will be the California Golden Bears on Nov. 20, according to a Wednesday press release from Syracuse Athletics. Madison Square Garden will play host to the game, which is scheduled to tip-off at approximately 9 p.m.

The two squads met during last season's EA Sports Maui Invitational, and Jim Boeheim and Co. claimed a 92-81 victory en route to the tournament championship. Overall, the Orange holds a 3-0 series advantage over the Bears.

The game will be televised on ESPN2.

Kick-start

Syracuse men's soccer won at least 10 games in each of its last two seasons, and coaches are starting to take notice.

The Orange received eight votes in the 2014 National Soccer Coaches Association of America/Continental Tire Preseason Poll, which was released on Wednesday. SU is ranked No. 38 in the country, tied with Northwestern.

Ian McIntyre's squad is one of eight ACC teams in the poll, including defending national champion Notre Dame.

The Orange returns 12 starters from 2013 and opens preseason training Aug. 13.

Dome Digs

Normally, Jim Boeheim Court is reserved for basketball. But for the third season in a row, the Carrier Dome will have an additional tenant.

Syracuse volleyball will host three matches in the Dome during the 2014-15 season, Syracuse Athletics revealed in a press announcement Wednesday. The Orange will face Louisville on Oct. 17, Wake Forest on Oct. 19 and Virginia Tech on Nov. 26.

SU is previously 3-3 in the Loud House, including two victories against ACC competition.

Kicker Ross Krautman out for season

A chronic hip injury has ended the fifth-year senior's Orange tenure.

Syracuse head coach Scott Shafer was full of optimism during Saturday's football media day at Manley Field House, but he did have one piece of bad news to report.

Senior kicker Ross Krautman will miss the entire 2014 season because of a lingering hip injury, Shafer announced during his opening press conference.

The SU coaching staff was hopeful that surgery and rehabilitation would help alleviate the hip ailment that sidelined Krautman for the final 11 games of 2013. But after meeting with doctors and Shafer, the senior decided to sit out this season.

"We were really hopeful he was going to make it back," Shafer said. "He'll be missed. He really will. More as a person than anything as far as the way I look at it."

Krautman finishes with 49 career field goals, tying him for third in program history. His best season came in 2010, when he connected on all but one of his 19 attempts.

Shafer also thanked Krautman for his commitment to the program, calling him "one of my favorite kids on the team."

Teammate Sean Hickey was quick to point out that Krautman will still be a major part of the Orange this season, but it won't be the same.

"To see a friend and someone I've been here with a long time go is tough," Hickey said. "He's always a funny guy. It's just going to be sad not seeing him there as a player."

The most likely replacement for Krautman is junior Ryan Norton, who connected on 10 field goal attempts last season.

St. John's to storm SU in December

Syracuse and its former Big East rival will square off on Dec. 6.

Syracuse has added another opponent to its 2014-15 schedule, and the name is one very familiar to Orange fans.

SU will welcome former conference foe St. John's to the Carrier Dome on Dec. 6 in the second contest of a home-and-home series announced last year, according to a release from Syracuse Athletics. The meeting will be the 89th overall between the two squads.

Both the Orange and Red Storm were original members of the Big East Conference, and they first battled in 1912. Syracuse owns a 51-37 advantage all-time, including a 68-63 victory at Madison Square Garden last season.

St. John's is led by former UCLA head coach and ESPN analyst Steve Lavin.

With a home game against Holy Cross also confirmed for Nov. 28, the Orange now has four regular season games set in stone (home games in bold):

Loyola (Md.) Nov. 25

Holy Cross Nov. 28

At Michigan (ACC/Big Ten Challenge) Dec. 2

St. John's Dec. 6

Shafer, Orange aiming for improvement

Syracuse head football coach sets season goal of eight victories during ESPN visit Monday.

Syracuse clawed its way to a bowl game last season, the school's first in the ACC, but head coach Scott Shafer is expecting even more in 2014.

Shafer joined Florida State's Jimbo Fisher, Louisville's Bobby Petrino and four other ACC coaches as part of ESPN's mid-summer "car wash" on Monday. The annual event invites coaches from around the country to appear across multiple platforms at the network's Bristol, Conn., headquarters.

According to a press release by Syracuse Athletics, Shafer's schedule included appearances on ESPN and ESPNU, along with an ESPN.com chat.

Shafer talked to ESPN's Todd Grisham during an afternoon "SportsCenter" broadcast, and he spoke about his excitement for the upcoming season.

"We know we can make good improvements coming off of a good victory over Minnesota (in the Texas Bowl)," Shafer told Grisham. "Now let's take this to the next level, and let's take this thing to new heights."

The second-year head coach added that his primary goal is to reach eight victories, one more than the Orange's 2013 total.

But with Clemson, Notre Dame and defending national champion Florida State ready to oppose SU, Shafer knows it won't be easy.

"You want to get a little bit better each season, so for us a little bit better is No. 8," he said. "It'll be a hell of a task with our schedule... but that's what we signed up for."

The Orange opens the 2014 season in the Carrier Dome against Villanova on August 29 at 7:30 p.m.

Carleton, Adrian part of Syracuse preseason schedule

The Orange will prepare for the 2014-15 season with home tilts against both schools.

Syracuse continues to await its full schedule for the 2014-15 season, but the Orange's final tune-ups are officially set.

According to Syracuse Athletics, Jim Boeheim and Co. will take the court for two exhibition games in the Carrier Dome on Nov. 2 and 10 against Carleton (Canada) and Adrian (Mich.), respectively.

Located in Ottawa, Carleton has won four consecutive Canadian Interuniversity Sports (CIS) championships and boasts a 292-14 record since 2000. The Ravens and Orange met in preseason play last August, as SU pulled away for a 69-65 overtime victory.

Adrian, an NCAA Division III program led by head coach Mark White, finished 5-20 last season.

SU won a pair of home preseason games against Holy Family and Ryerson in 2013. The Orange is seeking its seventh consecutive NCAA Tournament berth this season.

Tyler Ennis, Jerami Grant selected during 2014 NBA Draft

The Phoenix Suns take Ennis with 18th overall pick, while Grant reunites with Michael Carter-Williams in Philadelphia.

For a pair of former Syracuse basketball stars, the dream of playing in the NBA became reality at Barclays Center during Thursday's 2014 NBA Draft.

The Phoenix Suns selected point guard Tyler Ennis with the 18th overall pick, and the Philadelphia 76ers took forward Jerami Grant 39th overall. Ennis' early selection marked the third-consecutive year in which an Orange player was taken in the first round.

Ennis, who averaged 12.9 points and 5.5 assists last season with the Orange, is also the third Syracuse player to be drafted after only one year of college (Carmelo Anthony- 2003, Donte Greene- 2008). On a night full of trades and shuffled picks, multiple reports claimed the Toronto Raptors pursued the rights to the Ontario native following his selection. However, nothing materialized.

Grant, meanwhile, will join former Orange teammate Michael Carter-Williams in Philadelphia, which won only 19 games last season. Grant's father, Harvey, and uncle, Horace, previously enjoyed productive careers in the NBA.

Former Orange forward C.J. Fair was not selected after he averaged 16.5 points per game during his senior season.

Crunch game highlights Frozen Dome Classic

The AHL squad will battle the Utica Comets in the Carrier Dome's first ice hockey game on Nov. 22.

Carrier Dome managing director Peter Sala has joked that his venue is football stadium that thinks it's a hockey rink.

But this November, it will be an actual ice hockey rink for the first time.

At a press conference Wednesday afternoon, Syracuse Crunch owner Howard Dolgon announced that his team will take on the Utica Comets inside the Carrier Dome as part of the Frozen Dome Classic on Nov. 22.

"Four years ago, the Syracuse Crunch staged the first outdoor game in American Hockey League history, attended by a record-setting crowd," Dolgon said. "On Nov. 22, we will once again make history by playing the first-ever professional hockey game in the iconic Carrier Dome, a facility that has hosted humerous major sporting and entertainment events."

An additional game between Utica College and Oswego State and a charity tilt between Syracuse and Utica law enforcement are also planned for the day-long event.

The rink will be set up in a manner similar to the Dome's iconic basketball configuration, which can seat more than 30,000 fans. The current attendance record for an indoor professional game is 28,183 spectators, which was set in the Thunderdome in 1996.

The Crunch is the AHL affiliate of the Tampa Bay Lightning, while the Comets are affiliated with the Vancouver Canucks.

"We are always looking for events to place in the Carrier Dome that capture the community spirit, and this is clearly one that we believe will," Syracuse Director of Athletics Daryl Gross said. "We have such a fantastic relationship with the Crunch and Howard Dolgon and are thrilled to host what is sure to be a spectacular day of ice hockey in one of the most unique settings in America."

Syracuse, Georgetown to renew rivalry

The long-time Big East foes have agreed to a four-year, home-and-home series starting in 2015-16.

On Feb. 23, 2013, more than 35,000 fans packed the Carrier Dome to see Georgetown invade Jim Boeheim Court for one final time in Big East play.

But apparently not even conference realignment can keep the Orange and Hoyas apart.

Syracuse and Georgetown have reached an agreement that will extend their rivalry by at least four more games, according to a press release by Syracuse Athletics on Tuesday. The Hoyas and Orange will meet four times during a four-year span, starting with the series opener at the Verizon Center during the 2015-16 season. The two schools will then alternate hosting duties the following three seasons.

"Continuing this historically important rivalry has always been of the highest priority for us since our move to the ACC, and something I know our players, coaches, fans and the entire SU community are excited about," said Dr. Daryl Gross, Syracuse University's Director of Athletics. "When Syracuse and Georgetown go head-to-head, the intensity is unmatched, and the entire nation pays attention."

The two schools have met on the basketball court 90 times, with Syracuse holding a 49-41 advantage. They were original members of the Big East Conference, and their first matchup came during the 1929-30 season.

"In the early days of the Big East Conference, the Syracuse-Georgetown matchup quickly developed into one of college basketball's best rivalries," Orange head coach Jim Boeheim said. "The games in that series have been played at a remarkably high level over the years. We're looking forward to the challenge of playing Georgetown again."
