New photo and video editing apps have become social media platforms for college students

The nationwide popularity of Musical.ly and VSCO among teenagers and young adults have changed the way some SU students are participating in social media.

They have been featured in Rolling Stone and Business Insider for bursting onto the social media scene. They have gained popularity and millions of users despite many older than 25 being unaware of their existence. They have climbed the Apple app and Google Play stores’ charts peaking in the top ten. All these reasons drove communications and rhetorical studies junior, Dalena Vu to download Musical.ly one spring night while hanging out with friends.

Marshall Street is nestled only a block off Syracuse University’s campus, making it a prime location for students to venture and hang out. The shops provide access to necessities and luxuries, and the restaurants stay open late to accommodate the seemingly little sleep tha comes with student life.

More than 100 students and faculty shivered through Monday night's windy 30-degree weather in hooded sweatshirts to rally on the quad in support of Trayvon Martin, the unarmed 17 year old who was shot and killed a month ago by self-appointed neighborhood watchman George Zimmerman in Sanford, Fla.

Dancing For development

Syracuse University students danced the night away to help raise funds for Habitat for Humanity.

In the brightly-lit Sky Barn on South Campus, two girls toss around a balloon to each other, anticipating the arrival of students. A disc jockey sets up his equipment at the front of the barn, facing the dance floor. Balloons and streamers line the sides of the walls, and snacks donated by Pepsi are spread out on a table in the back. Everything needed for the dance is set, including several gallons of ice water, because this isn’t a typical dance — it’s a 12-hour dance marathon.
