Best running routes around campus

Whether you’re training for a long-distance race or just heading out for a quick jog, plenty of enjoyable running routes surround the Syracuse University campus.

Try out these three runs to explore the university and its surrounding neighborhoods. And remember to exercise safely—bring your phone, tell a friend where you’re going and never explore unfamiliar routes in the dark. Happy running!

The Campus One-Miler

This route takes you on a quick jog around campus, rounding the back of Carnegie Library and the Carrier Dome before looping back up to the Einhorn Family Walk through the middle of campus. If you time it just right, you might even catch the Crouse bells ringing out the Harry Potter theme song or SU Alma Mater to cheer you on for the last quarter mile. Try running in a counterclockwise loop for an added uphill challenge as you pass Sadler Hall and the SUNY-ESF campus.

The Middle Distance

Start this run by taking a left onto Comstock Avenue. You’ll get a glimpse of Chancellor Kent Syverud’s house on your way down the hill. Take a right onto E. Genesee Street and continue past Loguen Park to get to Westcott Street. Your trip down the street will bring you past all the sights Westcott has to offer—Boom Babies, the Westcott Theater, Picasso’s and more. You’ll reach the two-mile mark about halfway down Westcott Street. Take a right at Barry Park and follow the twists and turns of the road to get back to Comstock Avenue and finish your four mile run.

The Long-Distance to Jamesville

For those of you looking to rack up the miles on your runs, this is a great route with a variety of sights. The first mile takes you down Comstock Avenue to Manley Field House. Take a left onto East Colvin Street at the soccer field and follow it past Tops onto Nottingham Road. You’ll hit the three-mile mark around the Drumlins golf course. If you retrace your steps now, you’ve completed a solid six miles. Looking for more of a challenge? Continue down Nottingham Road until you reach Jamesville Road. At this point, you’ve actually left Syracuse and made it to Jamesville. Your 4.5-mile run will finish up just past the breezy highway overpass over Rams Gulch with its striking views of the fall foliage. Make your way back through the route to complete nine miles.
