UPDATE: Syracuse University will NOT honor Charlie Sheen

Thanks for checking out our April Fools' Day prank. Seriously, if Charlie Sheen shows up next week on campus, we didn't have anything to do with it.

Charlie Sheen to be awarded honor at Syracuse University

Charlie Sheen will be honored at Syracuse University next Wednesday for his recent accomplishments in the field of social media and communications.

The S.I. Newhouse School of Public Communications and The Tully Center for Free Speech will present the former Two and a Half Men actor with an honorary degree from Syracuse University.

Sheen will accept the award and take part in a Q&A session at 2:30 p.m. in the Joyce Hergenhan Auditorium of Newhouse 3. Overflow seating will be available in the Legal Seafoods area of Newhouse 3, and the event will be broadcast live through the university website.

Charlie Sheen to be awarded honor at Syracuse University

The social media magnate recently set a Guinness World Record for the fastest climb to a million Twitter followers — in a grand total of 25 hours and 17 minutes, between March 1 and 2.

While known for movies such as Major League, Platoon and Wall Street, Sheen's place in popular culture history may be marked for popularizing such terms as "tiger blood" and "winning."

"Charlie Sheen truly exemplifies our university's commitment to community engagement and Scholarship in Action," according to an official SU press release. "Honoring Sheen is another milestone in Syracuse University's gleaming path of educating our students to lead the way into the golden age of the online time of digital information."

Sheen's nationwide tour, "My Violent Torpedo of Truth/Defeat is Not An Option," is set to begin Saturday in Detroit. Last year, he was the highest paid actor on television. But Sheen's career is in limbo after being fired from CBS's top-rated Two and a Half Men.

Roy Gutterman, director of The Tully Center for Free Speech, said the center has been trying for weeks to bring Sheen to campus. He declined to disclose the amount SU agreed to pay Sheen for his speaking engagement.

"The value of Charlie's presence on the SU campus is priceless for our students," Gutterman said. "He truly personifies the free speech values of the Tully Center. We feel very privileged and honored that Charlie is bringing his tiger blood to campus to accept this award.

"Duh, Syracuse is winning."

Sheen award good for SU?

Don't be fooled.

Syracuse is not THAT stupid to honor that type of man. Shesh.

Best April Fool's Day Joke EVER!!

Kudos..

It's a joke people. Syracuse knows better than to honor this man.

Charlie Sheen????

Please.... PLEASE let this be a joke.

Absurd!

As a Newhouse alum, I'm embarrassed that they are giving this award to Charlie Sheen. Ok, it's pretty amazing that he got so many Twitter followers over night. However, I think they're forgetting that he's an unemployed coke-head that neglects his kids and locks hookers in closets. I also can't imagine that SU paid him any less than $50,000, and probably much more. It's good to see that this is how endowment $$$ is being spent.

#morons #Whatswrongwithnewhouse

ha ha ha

Please...can't we all just have some fun? I loved this as a nice way to celebrate April Fools! Great idea and for all who took it seriously, just lighten up and laugh - it will do your heart and soul some good. Hey, with all the political, moronic stuff that happens elsewhere at SU because of, say, one's longevity or credentials (but nothing else to offer)...this is quite a relief!

NICE!

Syracuse University, especially the Newhouse School, should be enthralled in Charlie Sheen and his continuing developing persona. While exploding into a bigger and bigger pop culture sensation he also reveals a lot about the same society that public communication students are trying to reach. Quit letting your personal feelings about him keep you from learning from him.

Hopefully this is an April

Hopefully this is an April Fool's Day joke. This is like rewarding a 5 year old's bad/mis behavior with a prize----Charlie Sheen needs mental help.....and I used to like him for his movies as well as Two and a half Men!

Sheen at SU - WINNING!

It's about time you media trolls recognized Charlie Sheen's rock star from Mars brilliance. Duh! Can you say WINNING, again? He will EXPLODE at SU, splattering all the little people with his righteous tiger blood.

Nice try

haha Nice try. Happy April Fools day. :)

OH LORD HAVE MERCY

OMG i hope this is April fool's day cuz its not funny....This guy of all people?

Agreed

I really hope that this is a joke because now I view Syracuse university as a joke.

Joke? Where did you graduate from?

This is what education is all about. This is what free-speech is all about. Students are not mindless robots - they are able to formulate their own ideas and thoughts. Charlie Sheen may not be the guy you want to bring home to meet your parents - but the guy is accomplished. He has his problems - and university age students can relate to some of them. Some might idolize him. Some might not. But there is no denying that he is successful and has the abilty to re-invent himself and remain popular. Most people believe that everyone needs to fit into a little box - what is right and what is wrong - anyone that does not see the world that way is wrong. He doesn't, he doesn't care and he is successful. I think that is part of the message - you do not have to conform to be successful - but you have to do what you believe is right - even if the rest of the world is wrong. This is a benefit to SU, the students and the community. And to view Syracuse University and all its students, faculty, and graduates a joke - that might be an extreme exaggeration - you have something specific to say - then express yourself. My education at SU has taught me to do that and to view everything around me before I make judgement.

So you're an SU grad, huh?.........

If you are an example of the product Newhouse puts out, it should be shut down!

And with all of your high-sounding rhetoric, you should be reminded that genuinely intelligent people also have the intellectual capability to separate the wheat from the chaff, even when it comes to evaluating others. Your defense of Sheen is amusing, yet discouraging at the same time.

Happy April Fools Day, genius!

NO

So, "doing what you believe is right" would encompass choking a prostitute and doing drugs on a family vacation?
