Jimmy John's

If you are craving a sandwich like mom used to make, or want to indulge in a sandwich fit for a Super Bowl party, Jimmy John’s has it. From Italian clubs to vegetarian specials, this sandwich shop has it all. Jimmy John's offers a friendly atmosphere, reasonable prices, and delicious subs.

When to Go: Jimmy John’s is open seven days a week, 11 a.m.-3 a.m., which allows customers to enjoy lunch, dinner, or a late-night snack after an evening of partying. The restaurant is big enough to sit people at a few booths and tables, but it might be best to avoid trying to eat there during peak hours. Jimmy John’s also delivers every day. The bottom line: The shop experiences high volumes around lunch and dinner times, but it will rarely get so busy that you won’t mind waiting in line.

On Tap: No alcoholic beverages are served at Jimmy John’s, but there are a variety of soft drinks on tap. Coke, Diet Coke, Sprite, iced tea and other classics are all available from the dispenser on the wall. The bottom line: If you’re looking for a nice pilsner or lager to go with your sub, then this isn’t the place for you.

Blue Plate Special: This is a two-part answer depending on your preference. The true heavy hitter on the menu is the J.J, Gargantuan, a sandwich that could challenge that guy from Man v. Food. This behemoth of a sub piles salami, ham, capicola, roast beef, turkey, provolone cheese, onions, lettuce and tomato into a giant sub roll and then slathers it with mayo and homemade Italian dressing. If for some reason you want a sandwich with no bread, Jimmy John’s offers the JJ Unwich, which allows you to order any sub or club on the menu but substitute a low carb lettuce wrap for the bread. The bottom line: Unwich if you’re on a diet, gargantuan if you’re not.

The Scene: Jimmy John’s is an unassuming establishment, but that only adds to its appeal. It evokes the feeling of those local sandwich shops back home, where the deli man knows you by name. The walls are decorated with hilarious signs such as the “Do’s and Don’ts” of eating at Jimmy Johns, which offer some sincere advice, but mostly just make you laugh. Music is constantly pumping through the speakers, and customers can hear anything from Dave Matthews Band to the Foo Fighters. The bottom line: The shop isn’t flashy, but its down-home atmosphere makes it an ideal place to stop and enjoy yourself while you eat.

The Crew: The workers behind the counter are friendly and capable, ready to assemble your sandwich to your liking. It’s highly unlikely that you’ll be sharing your life stories with each other, but some pleasant words and chit-chat are common. The bottom line: The crew is nothing but helpful at Jimmy John’s.

The Crowd: All types of people are a common sight at Jimmy John’s, though college students make up the bulk of the clientele because of the shop’s proximity to campus. Still, families, businessmen on lunch break, and others can be seen enjoying a sub. The bottom line: If you’re hungry, you’re welcome at Jimmy John’s.

The Deets: The sandwiches at Jimmy John’s are a great value. An eight-inch sub sandwich costs $4.65, while the larger “Giant Club” sandwiches are $5.65. The J.J. Gargantuan, the special of the house, is slightly more expensive. You’ll spend $7.65 if you want to test your mettle against this beast. The “Plain Slims,” subs without vegetables and sauce, cost $3.65. In total, approximately 20 sandwiches populate the menu. Finally, Jimmy John’s offers sides such as cookies and potato chips at reasonable prices, typically $1.25 or $1.50, and some free toppings for sandwiches. The bottom line: If you want a sandwich, Jimmy John’s is the place to go.
