The Syracuse football team ended its season with a record-setting loss at Pittsburgh on Saturday afternoon.
SU fell to the Panthers, 76-61, at Heinz Field in the highest scoring regulation FBS game ever. The teams ran 165 plays, combined for 1,312 yards and 58 first downs. The cumulative points eclipsed the previous record high scoring total of 136 set by Boise State and Nevada [10] in 2007 and tied by Navy and North Texas [11]later that season.
Playing for the third straight week without starting quarterback Eric Dungey [12], backup Zack Mahoney [13] threw for five touchdowns and added another two on the ground. His 489 yards of total offense was the second-highest single game output in SU (4-8, 2-6 ACC) program history.
In his final collegiate game, Amba Etta-Tawo [14] hauled in 13 passes for 178 yards and all five of Mahoney’s touchdown passes. Etta-Tawo earned first-team All-ACC honors on Monday after finishing the season with 1,482 receiving yards and 14 touchdowns.
But Pittsburgh (8-4, 5-3 ACC) dominated on the ground. The Panthers accumulated 393 yards on the ground and added six rushing touchdowns. Four Pittsburgh players rushed for over 75 yards. Panthers quarterback Nathan Peterman [15] completed just nine passes in the game, but four went for scores.
