The cold temperatures might suggest otherwise, but baseball is back at Syracuse's NBT Bank Stadium.
The Syracuse Chiefs, the International League affiliate of the Washington Nationals, recently wrapped up their first homestand of the 2015 season. After reaching the IL Playoffs last season on the heels of their first division title since 1989, the Chiefs are hoping to establish themselves as one of the contenders of the IL North Division.
Despite the loss of touted prospect Steven Souza, Jr., hard hitting infielder Zach Walters and rotation anchor Aaron Laffey, the Syracuse lineup boasts a number of potential stars. Home-run threats Kila Ka'aihue and Ian Stewart are expected to drive in plenty of runs, while former New York Mets prospect Matt den Dekker should be a fixture at the top of the lineup. They are complemented by a veteran bullpen that features former MLB hurlers Rich Hill, Evan Meek and Manny Delcarmen.
The NewsHouse was at NBT Bank Stadium on Friday, April 17, as the Chiefs fell to the Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders, 8-7, in 10 innings. After falling behind early, the Chiefs tied the game in the 8th inning on a mammoth home run to right field by Ka'aihue. However, one of Slade Heathcott's three RBI ultimately propelled SWB to victory in the extra frame.
