While celebrities are under constant scrutiny for what they wear in daily life, nothing beats the critique or praise they receive for their red carpet choices—we have the Fashion Police to thank for that. With the Grammys and the Golden Globes already behind us, the fashion faux pas and trends to watch out for have already been set. And in prepartion for the upcoming Academy Awards on March 2, here are some trends to look out for:
Red on Red:
It seems illogical to wear red on the red carpet, but that is not the case this season. Celebrities from Jennifer Lawrence in a silky rouge, black-belted Dior gown to Noami Watts in a deep, burgundy-colored, body-hugging gown — both at the Golden Globes — disprove that arguement. The best dressed of the evening, also in red, was Lupita Nyong’o, donning a Ralph Lauren cape dress that few others could pull off.
Who knew blending in could stand out so much?
Mental for Metallics:
All that glitters is gold, at least with this year’s red carpet trends. Chrissy Teigen donned a shimmering gold gown with a plunging neckline, while Taylor Swift took a more conservative, but equally beautiful approach, wearing a gold lamé Gucci frock at the Grammys. Rita Ora opted for a metallic, long-sleeve, green Lanvin dress, showing how to make this trend work for her personal style, while staying in vogue.
Floral Festivity:
Getting a head start on spring, multiple women on the red carpet chose floral patterns for the big night. While definitely a risky move — especially thinking back to Kim Kardashian’s dress at the Met Gala — Tina Fey, Drew Barrymore and Kaley Cuoco brought the formal and fabulous back to floral in their array of Carolina Herrera, Monique Lhuillier and Rani Zakhem dresses.
Color-Blocking:
Taking a cue from runway trends, stars like Sandra Bullock and Julie Bowen gave color-blocked gowns a go at the Golden Globes. Bullock’s Prabal Gurung dress was combination of pink, light blue and black that came together for a surprisingly chic collaboration. Bowen wore a mermaid style gown, with a luxurious purple skirt and velvet, red top.
Taking the Plunge:
The key to showing off skin is to do so tastefully, as done on the red carpet this award season. At the Golden Globes, Kate Mara wore a silver J. Mendel dress that kept the plunge as the focus, with a more conservatie shoulder and length. In an Andrew Gn dress, Julianna Margulies took a tasteful plunge in black and gold.
