Seniors from the College of Visual and Preforming Arts [10] showed off their final projects in two fashion shows this year, including a matinee fashion show on April 28 and an evening performance on April 29. The event featured the designs on the 20 female graduating seniors.
Each student produced a collection of about five or six outfits over the course of the academic year. Designer Morgan Julia Bisignano said that she and the other students focused primarily on designing and planning during the fall semester, while the spring semester was spent constructing the clothing.
The recently renovated Warehouse [11] building, located on West Fayette Street in downtown Syracuse, houses the studios where students work.
Each designer was responsible for styling his or her own collection, which entailed picking out accessories, hair and make-up, music, and models.
Leah Testa designed a collection of workout wear because of her background as an athlete. She originally had intended on using her track teamates as her models. Scheduling issues prevented them from committing, but she insisted that the models be athletic.
"I ended up finding some really athletic models, so I was happy," she said.
One other designer, Alex Herzog, cast her friends and even a family member.
Gina Moyer, who aspires to be a professional model, said being cast in Dayna Shay Teitelbaum's segment of the show was "good runway practice."
Designers drew inspiration from different places, with Herzog looking to the inventor of modern dance, Isadora Duncan, for ideas. Bisignano saying her designs were influenced by Greek and Roman columns.
Twelve designers from the class earned the opportunity to show their collections again at a May 19 gala in New York City [12] in part honoring SU alum Vanessa Williams.
