Concertgoers filled Syracuse University’s Goldstein Auditorium on April 1, 2016 for the Greek Unity Fest concert.
Those who attended came to see New York City’s Legendary Dj Premiere and MC Fabolous headline a hip-hop showcase that featured performances by local djs, rappers, and Greek lettered sororities and fraternities that attend SU.
Milan, an upcoming rapper from Bronx, N.Y., hyped up the audience first. Her energetic set kept the audience engaged right before one of the headliners went on.
Sporting a Syracuse ball cap with a black and white t-shirt that read Preemo, Dj Premier commanded two turntables, a mixer, a laptop, and a microphone while taking the crowd on a journey back into time through music. He demonstrated hip-hop’s staying power by playing and scratching classic records from the 80s, 90s and early 2000s, as well as current crowd favorites.
“He’s one of the classic Djs” said Dan Serignes, a student at Buffalo State who traveled to SU for the show. ”He’s playing tracks that people can relate to, not only from this age, but from the golden age of hip-hop.”
Premier masterfully orchestrated the crowd by keeping them dancing and reciting the lyrics to songs he blended. He brought the audience to a high-energy peak directly before the main act of the evening took the stage.
Dressed in a #5 Syracuse Orange basketball jersey, Fabolous from Brooklyn, N.Y., emerged from backstage at around 9:50pm to immense roars from the eager crowd. He also sported multiple gold jewelry items, and gold rimed sunglasses. After stating to the audience that he was rooting for the Orange men and women in their upcoming Final Four appearances, he immediately went into crowd favorite “I Am The Plug” while they sang along loudly. Before his nearly one hour set was over Fabolous had ran through some of his most memorable songs such as “You Make Me Better”, “Super Woman”, “I’m a Rider”, “Holla Back”, and “Breath”.
“I loved the concert, Fabolous performed all my favorite songs’, said senior Jahnise Slaughter. “My favorite song is “Breath” because it’s like a classic.”
The sold-out concert was presented by SU’s National Pan-Hellenic Council, a collaborative organization of nine historically African American, international Greek lettered fraternities and sororities.
