Less than a year ago Marion Wilson bought a house on the Near Westside through Syracuse University's Scholarship in Action [12]. The house had been run down and used as a drug headquarters among some area residents.
Today, Wilson, director of Community Initiatives in the Visual Arts at SU, and her team aim to transform the property into a sustainable store and center for the community of the Westside landscape.
In April, student volunteers with OrangeSeeds helped the 601 Tully [13] crew clean out the backyard, where they hope to build a garden. 601 Tully was one of the seven sites on the Westside where students could lend a helping hand to the area. The project represents another collaborative initiative by the university to build and revitalize the struggling Westside community.
