Syracuse came into Thursday’s showdown with Colgate riding a three-game winning streak, but had the wind taken out of its sails early against Colgate.
Emily Crichlow's goal from 22 yards out in the third minute put the Orange in an early hole, and it was unable to recover as Colgate held on for a 1-0 [10] victory in Hamilton, New York.
SU struggled to find scoring opportunities in the first half and mustered only two legitimate chances, both off the foot of freshman forward Alex Lamontagne. Lamontagne’s first shot in the 17th minute went just wide of the goal, and her second shot in the 39th minute was steered away by Colgate’s sophomore goalkeeper Brenna Mason.
Syracuse head coach Phil Wheddon [11] was extremely frustrated by the team’s first half struggles.
"We had a game plan but we didn't execute it in the first half,” Wheddon said. “As a result we gave Colgate an open shot and it resulted in a goal.
“If we had executed our game plan from the start we would have been alright.”
The Orange came out firing in the second half, but was unable to score despite pelting the Raiders (4-1-1) with ten shots in the second half.
The loss dropped the Orange to 3-2-2
Syracuse will try to rebound on Sunday, as the team travels to Philadelphia to take on Drexel.
