A Syracuse University student reported being harassed by her roommate for being Muslim to the point where she had to leave campus.
The roommate had done things such as tear up a Koran and play KKK speeches, according to an email circulated to faculty and students in the Maxwell School of Citizenship and Public Affairs [11]. The student had contacted the Department of Public Safety [12] and called 911, but said no one intervened. In early February, another student helped her get to a safe off-campus apartment.
DPS public information officer Christine Weber said DPS received a report of alleged harassment and had a patrol officer investigate the situation. The student chose not to file a formal complaint.
“However, despite the absence of a formal complaint, the University has taken a number of steps to provide the involved students with the support they need to thrive at Syracuse University,” she said in an emailed statement, adding that multiple SU offices are working together to find an appropriate resolution for the situation.
The email circulated throughout the Maxwell School instructed students, faculty and staff to contact DPS if a similar incident occur in the future.
“If you have any concerns about the DPS response, or any questions about additional actions (e.g., helping students file a complaint), do not hesitate to go directly to the top,” the email stated.
