Valentine's Day

Two Syracuse couples share their respective stories of what keeps a relationship working for Valentine's Day.

The love that Lydia and Earl Smith share spans 75 years.

The couple first met in Waterville, N.Y. when Lydia was 15 years old and Earl was 19. After two years of dating, Earl proposed to Lydia in a letter. The young couple were married on Nov. 9, 1943.
Now in their 90s, the couple seem just as passionate as ever. Earl often refers to Lydia as “my love,” and the couple are always seen holding hands around the James Square Health & Rehabilitation Centre in Syracuse.

The snow didn't stop those with a sweet tooth from going to A Taste of Chocolate at the Columbian Presbyterian Church in LaFayette on Saturday.

Chocolate is one of the few things that could get 100 people out to Columbian Presbyterian Church during a Saturday snowstorm.

Tom Redmore, an elder at Columbian Presbyterian Church in LaFayette, started A Taste of Chocolate six years ago after trying to come up with a new fundraising idea and seeing how much money people spent on Valentine’s Day every year.

Mark your calendar for a Feb. 13 day out with the girls to celebrate Galentine's Day.

Valentine's Day is usually filled with stress and (hopefully) chocolate. We’ve all stressed about wearing the perfect outfit, giving and receiving the cutest gifts and figuring out how to tell that special someone that you actually exist.

The "This American Life" producer took the stage at the State Theatre of Ithaca to warm the hearts of frozen New Yorkers who braved the blizzard to spend Valentine's Day with him.

Despite the snow squalls, low visibility, 40 mile-per-hour-wind gusts…and oh yeah—snow squalls—my love, Ira Glass, and I were able to persevere and meet up for a romantic Valentine’s Day rendezvous at the State Theatre of Ithaca.

The venue was packed with 1,200 other people celebrating the day of love with a common passion for public radio and a nasally-voiced hottie.

Commentary: Ladies, you didn't actually think you'd get a dozen roses, right?

College is a breeding ground for your expectations to be completely crushed by the harshness that is reality. When in college, we still have the naivety to expect things that likely won't happen, and the hammer of truth comes down hard when we find out they don't. It's like we are constantly living in one of those "expectation vs reality" memes.

The NewsHouse team combed campus to see if Tyler and Katy could make loveable first impressions.

What if a stranger approached you on the street with a heart-shaped bouquet of fake roses, asking you to be their Valentine? Would you say yes? Would you walk away quickly?

Katy Beals and I took to the Hill to see how people would react to such a situation. Maybe it was the cold weather, maybe it was tacky fake roses, but the duo received mixed results during their casual competition.

Perched outside Marshal Square Mall, between Schine Student Center and Newhouse and on the Quad, we tried multiple methods of finding Valentines on cold-yet-sunny February morning.

It’s Valentine's Day.

The annual celebration of both love and absolute misery. The most bipolar holiday of all.

Those who are unequivocally in love, love Valentine's Day. Duh, obvious.
