Syracuse has targeted gangs and gang activity to combat violence, but one group says to solve this problem the city needs to focus on neighborhood relationships.

Cities across the country are developing different ways to combat violence and crime within their urban landscapes. The City of Syracuse is no different. For the last 15 years the Syracuse Police Department and community members have developed programs and groups to help make the city a safer place.

Despite these initiatives, violence and crime have not changed much, and in some cases have even increased.

Students celebrated the end of the school year with a passion for good music at Syracuse University's annual Carrier Dome concert.

More than 13,000 people bounced up and down for four hours at the Carrier Dome on Friday to the tunes of Jon Bellion, Chance the Rapper and The ChainsmokersFans were excited for the concert, pushing their way as close to the barrier between the stage and audience before any performer was even on stage.

An interactive runway experience dazzled the crowd at the Syracuse Fashion Week Gala.

Pushing theatrics to the brink, the Syracuse Fashion Week Gala at The Landmark Theatre on Friday night was a cross-section of styles both on and off the runway.

Syracuse Fashion Week founder and theater maven Lisa Marie Butler gave designers and boutiques the freedom to make their time on the runway an interactive performance for the audience.

The House of S. Jaye hosts art shows and vendor markets that give Syracuse artists a platform to share their creations.

Last Sunday, the House of S. Jaye hosted the Syracuse Indie Market for its third vendor show. The art studio has held weekly art shows, dance classes, non-profit events and even a concert by Symphoria, a local co-op orchestra, since it opened over two years ago.

Sam Randolph, the studio’s founder and owner, hopes to make the Indie Market a weekly event.

Day 2 of Syracuse Fashion Week presented, "It's a Mod, Mod World," showcasing new age designs.

It was a mod, mod world on Thursday for Syracuse Fashion Week. Set in the city’s Tech Garden, models paraded the runway, encompassing a different personality with every ensemble. Empire Brewery joined the crowd and coupled hors d'oeuvres with the event’s signature beer, “Runway Rose.”

Syracuse Fashion Week kicked off with a Fashions at the Mansion show at the Barnes-Hiscock House on Wednesday night.

Local boutiques such as The Changing Room, Frameology Optical, Style Dots, FashionFix Designs and more were present at the event.

A grassroots campaign does not take place in a grand ballroom. It typically doesn’t sell out arenas or stadiums. Usually you will be hard-pressed to find donors that can give more than twenty dollars of their paycheck. But that seems to be why Sen. Bernie Sanders and his message attract so many supporters. The Vermont senator is resonating with so many people in his bid to win the nomination of the Democratic Party.

SU's Trans Day of Liberation is April 6, but for many transgender twenty-somethings, the high costs of surgeries and hormone therapy mean liberation comes at a high price.

On the wooden-planked porch of an Ostrom Avenue home, a small group of students blows puffs of cigarette smoke into the freezing air, their happy banter bringing the otherwise silent street to life. In the huddle of knit beanies, worn jeans and black and khaki-colored coats stands Mateo Diaz, 21, house resident and the night’s host. He emerges from a dissipating cloud — dressed in his own black beanie, flannel-lined denim jacket, black jeans and black leather combat boots — and heads down the porch’s stairs, directing party-ready guests toward the back door.

The democratic hopeful led a small business roundtable and public rally at the Regional Market.

Dressed in orange, Democratic candidate Hillary Clinton voiced her committment to the Syracuse basketball teams headed to the final four. But Clinton was not in Syracuse to talk basketball. She was there to talk about the future of the country.

“Don’t count us out. We’ve got the grit, we’ve got the resilience and the determination,” Clinton said. “That’s what our country needs right now.”

Concertgoers assembled in Syracuse University’s Schine Underground on March 23 to witness the performance of a Dr. Dre protégé from Oxnard, California. 

Anderson .Paak, the star of the show, was in town fresh off a critically acclaimed performance at SXSW in Austin, Texas. He took the stage around 9:30 p.m. dressed in red from head to toe, including fresh black and red Adidas sneakers, as well as a Tony Montana “Scarface” T-Shirt.
