The fair is a volunteer-driven effort organized by the Westcott Area Cultural Coalition, and the planning, “never stops,” Sharon Sherman, chair and treasurer of WACC, said. “It’s to celebrate this neighborhood,” she said. “I just like to see people happy, and with the fair, you see people from different walks of life coming together that I wouldn’t expect.”

After seeing the words emblazoned on a bumper sticker in Salem, Mass. on a trip with his wife, Hohmann decided to do a little exploring.

“I’d obviously heard the term ‘pagan’ before, but I was like, ‘Who would put that on their car and why?’” Hohmann, now 48 and the local coordinator of the Central New York Pagan Pride Festival, said.

After years of moving around, Rick Destito returned to Central New York to try to breathe a new culture into the area by providing a space designated for artists and entrepreneurs.

When he left Central New York 14 years ago, Rick Destito had the same attitude many people still have. He complained about high taxes and the weather, and he yearned to leave town.

When he returned here a few years later, Destito had a new outlook and ideas about how to change people’s perceptions of Syracuse. He wondered if bringing what he admired in other cities to Syracuse could make it a better place to be.

Syracuse's school record 15-game winning streak came to an end as the team dropped only its second game of the season

As the Orange deficit increased, the energy slowly drained out of the Carrier Dome. There were no more fans cheering, no more teammates encouraging, and the style of play turned sluggish as No. 1 seeded Syracuse struggled from the start, losing to Loyola, 13-7 in the Big East championship game on Saturday.

“Well, that didn’t quite go as planned,” Syracuse head coach Gary Gait said bluntly after the game.
