Syracuse Orange

April 11, 2010 - 1:52am
SU's lacrosse team handily beats Princeton 13-4 Saturday at the first-ever event at New Meadowlands Stadium.

Led by senior Cody Jamieson, who had four goals and one assist on the night, the Orange controlled the game and scored at will on Princeton. The Tigers played a cautious defensive game and it cost them, as shooting lanes opened up regularly and Syracuse was able to capitalize on nearly every opportunity.

Stephen Keogh reaches his 100th career point and helps lead his team to a 15-8 victory against the Albany Great Danes.

It was a gorgeous, sunny, record-setting day at the Carrier Dome, but things were not so great for the Danes. Syracuse (6-1) brought in the heat from outside, and dominated Albany (2-6) 15-8. Today's game marked the No. 2 Syracuse Orange as the second team ever to reach 800 wins in Division-I lacrosse. Their all-time record is now 800-309-16 since 1916.

After a poor performance recently at Hobart, the SU men’s lacrosse team gets back on track in a Monday afternoon game.

The Orange came into Monday’s game with a 5-1 record, 1-0 (Big East), fresh off a sloppy 9-8 overtime win against Hobart. The Wildcats entered the game with a 5-2 record and a two-game winning streak. But this game, the Wildcats first ever in the Big East Conference, was one Villanova would like to forget.

After getting off to a 1-0 start thanks to sophomore midfielder Michael Vigilante, the Wildcats did not have much else to cheer about. SU went on to score three consecutive goals and take a 5-2 lead going into the second quarter.

Syracuse (30-4) travels to Salt Lake City for its Sweet Sixteen matchup with Butler (30-4). Tip-off is 7:07 p.m. EST.

Syracuse starting forward Rick Jackson getting into foul trouble was the best thing to happen to Syracuse on Sunday afternoon.

With two hands tied behind their backs (the team's other starting forward Arinze Onuaku was inactive with a leg injury), the Orange took a bat to Gonzaga’s pumpkin chariot, and put up 87 points on the Cinderella-turned-NCAA-regular.

"This is as well as we've played all year," said Syracuse head coach Jim Boeheim. "It was a tremendous performance."

March 20, 2010 - 11:48am
Top-seeded Syracuse shook off naysayers and upset watchers, dominating No. 16 seed Catamounts, 79-56.

The NCAA men’s basketball tournament is a new start for 65 teams. Teams get a coveted bid, push the re-set button, and go about making adjustments.

The top seeds usually need little adjustment, but Syracuse’s first No. 1 seed in 30 years came with strings attached. After winning 28 games and the Big East regular season title, Orange head coach Jim Boeheim had a to-do list that include: insert a new rotation, weather the team’s longest layoff in four months, and exorcise the Vermont demons from 2005.

March 11, 2010 - 5:38pm
Turnovers, defensive woes and a worrying injury troubled the one-seeded Syracuse Orange as they fell to eighth seed Georgetown in the Big East tournament quarterfinals, 91-84.

Two kinds of fans filled Madison Square Garden this afternoon.  Half wore Orange, and stood in stunned silence.  The other half wore just about anything else, and cheered as loud as they could for the top seed to fall.  They got their wish.

Six minutes into the second half, Syracuse watched their lead dwindle from a game high nine points, to one point in under two minutes.  And with a 2-point field goal by Vee Sanford, Georgetown took the lead and never lost it.

March 9, 2010 - 8:11pm
The 31st Big East men's basketball tournament will captivate fans for five days and 15 games before the champion is crowned Saturday night.

Syracuse is the top seed and Louisville is the defending champion; and that’s all we know for certain at this point.

February 3, 2010 - 12:30am
Kris Joseph and Arinze Onuaku lead No. 3 Syracuse to a 22-1 record and the team's best start ever with an 85-68 win over Providence.

Prized Syracuse forward Wesley Johnson went down hard to the floor eight minutes into the first half, but the story of the night was reserved for the flight of a sophomore standout and senior staple.

Kris Joseph scored a career-high 23 points and Arinze Onuaku added a season-best 20 as the Orange squashed the Providence Friars 85-68 to improve to a school-best 22-1 record.

“A.O. was the most active he’s been all year,” SU Coach Jim Boeheim said. “He hasn’t been having the kind of year we need from him."

This is the third installment of “Friday Five,” a weekly column with analysis and insight on the Orange, the Big East and the rest of college basketball.

Halftime Snack is out of position and just got called for a blocking foul. This theme is going to run wild, or fall over with a thud.

The starting five:

Syracuse continues its 7-game winning streak against rival Georgetown in a boisterous Dome.

Big heads, big names, big blocks and big noise filled the Carrier Dome Monday night.

Unofficial technology (i.e. iPhone applications) measured the crowd volume at 105 decibels on press row, somewhere in the neighborhood of the levels recorded in the Louisiana Superdome for the NFC Championship between the NFL’s Minnesota Vikings and New Orleans Saints on Sunday.

Loud and proud, that’s the Syracuse Orange fan right now.
