Syracuse Orange

January 26, 2015 - 10:52am
The point guard scored 27 points as the Orange launched a furious second-half run to pull away.

With his team shooting a paltry 24 percent from the field and failing to make the necessary hustle plays, Syracuse head coach Quentin Hillsman told his club at halftime to show more urgency.

Consider the message received.

Led by Alexis Peterson’s 27 points and a big double-double from Briana Day, No. 23/22 Syracuse (15-5, 5-2) came out of the Carrier Dome locker room with a newfound swagger and intensity, blitzing North Carolina State (12-8, 3-4) with a 23-0 run en route to its fifth-straight victory Sunday night, 66-49.

January 25, 2015 - 2:28am
Key misses by Rakeem Christmas and Michael Gbinije down the stretch allow the Hurricanes to escape with another conference victory.

Syracuse was forced to erase a double-digit deficit against Miami twice on Saturday, and it succeeded both times with an array of contested three-point field goals and a yeoman’s effort in the paint by center Rakeem Christmas

But when presented with easy points at the free throw line, the Orange showed nowhere near as much resolve and let both comebacks go to waste.

January 21, 2015 - 5:06pm
With Rakeem Christmas battling foul trouble, the Orange's secondary scoring options led the team to a rebound win.

For 17 minutes of Syracuse’s game against Boston College, Orange center Rakeem Christmas found himself in an unfamiliar place:  the SU bench.

Syracuse’s leading scorer couldn’t escape foul trouble on Tuesday night, but his teammates stepped up in his absence.  Four other Orange players scored in double figures to lead the Orange (14-5, 5-1 Atlantic Coast) to a 69-61 victory over the Eagles (8-9, 0-5 Atlantic Coast).

January 14, 2015 - 5:43pm
The senior poured in a career-high 35 points as the Orange continued its hot start in conference play.

With freshman forward Chris McCullough now sidelined for the rest of the season, Syracuse will need to move forward without half of its potent one-two punch inside the paint.

But on Tuesday night against Wake Forest, the other half proved he’s capable of delivering knockout blows all by himself.

January 13, 2015 - 3:06am
The redshirt-junior's season-high 28 points propelled SU to its first ACC home win of the season.

During the opening weeks of the 2014-15 season, Trevor Cooney’s potentially lethal three-point stroke lay buried in a dormant slumber.

But if there were any doubts that he would eventually find it again, Cooney erased them Sunday night against Florida State.

January 12, 2015 - 6:33pm
The freshman had started all 16 games for the Orange.

Syracuse forward Chris McCullough will miss the remainder of the 2014-15 season after tearing the ACL in his right knee Sunday evening against Florida State, Syracuse Athletics announced on Monday afternoon.

Surgery has not been scheduled, according to the release.

January 6, 2015 - 8:46pm
The junior has now suffered two ACL injuries within the past 10 months.

No. 21 Syracuse, off to a 10-4 start, will be without star guard Brittney Sykes for the rest of the season, according to a release by Syracuse Athletics on Tuesday.

Sykes, who left Sunday’s game against No. 4 Notre Dame, re-aggravated her surgically repaired ACL after originally tearing it last March in the first round of the NCAA tournament. She made her season debut on Dec. 28 and played in only three games this season.

January 2, 2015 - 11:45pm
A struggling offense and off-the-field distractions derailed a promising start to the 2014 season.

Syracuse head coach Phil Wheddon had one word to sum up the 2014 season.

Disappointment.

Although the Orange strung together a decent start, it began to hit a lull during the middle of the campaign and struggled to capitalize on scoring chances, an issue that became even more prevalent against four ranked opponents at the end of the season. SU finished with an overall record of 5-10-4 and failed to qualify for the Atlantic Coast Conference and NCAA tournaments.

January 2, 2015 - 12:01pm
Without a signature win to its credit, SU is hoping for a strong push during conference play to bolster its tournament chances.

Since the Orange’s opening victory against Kennesaw State on Nov. 14, Syracuse head coach Jim Boeheim has repeatedly said his team has the potential and talent to win any game. All it needed was time, both for key underclassmen to find an offensive flow and the team’s confidence to return to a level not seen since last season’s 25-game winning streak.

But as the Orange’s second slate of Atlantic Coast Conference games began Saturday at Virginia Tech, that time officially ran out.

January 1, 2015 - 2:18am
Led by one of the nation's best players in goalkeeper Alex Bono, the Orange became a legitimate ACC contender.

Magical. Remarkable. Extraordinary.

Heartbreaking.

With a painful 2-1 overtime loss to Georgetown in the third round of the NCAA Division I Men’s Soccer Championship on Nov. 30, a monumental season came to a grinding halt for head coach Ian McIntyre and his Syracuse squad.
