Superstitions in SU Sports

SU student-athletes share their daily rituals and superstitions that they believe affect their game.

Basketball legend Michael Jordan wore his University of North Carolina basketball shorts under his Chicago Bulls uniform every game. Hall of Famer Wade Boggs was known for eating a chicken before each baseball game. Top female tennis player Serena Williams always brings her shower sandals to the court.

But why do these athletes do these same things before every game?

SU Softball steamrolls Rutgers in weekend sweep

Syracuse won its opening game 23-0, then rode that winning wave throughout the weekend as they swept Rutgers and improved to 24-5 overall.

Following another successful weekend, Syracuse Softball is approaching an eight game winning streak which would tie for the longest streak in school history. SU (24-5, 3-0) swept Rutgers this past weekend to extend its winning ways.

Despite playing on the Scarlet Knight’s home turf, it was the Orange who dominated, as they demolished Rutgers, 23-0, in the opening game. Syracuse’s offense got off to a fast start by scoring four in the first inning and it never looked back.

SU Softball has strong showing in tournament at University of Florida

Orange win four out of five, improve to 16-3 after trip to the University of Florida Lipton Invitational.

Syracuse softball ventured to “The Swamp” of Gainesville, Fla. to take part in the University of Florida Lipton Invitational, and the only team gave the girls any trouble was the home team. SU had a successful trip in which it won four out of the five games.

Orange Softball sweeps Cathedral City Classic

Syracuse won five close games over the weekend to improve to 12-2 on the season as they swept the Cathedral City Classic in Palm Springs, Calif.

Syracuse softball took its talents to Palm Springs, Calif., and had a clean sweep of the competition in this year’s Cathedral City Classic.

No. 3 Alabama hands Orange softball first losses

Syracuse started the 2011 6-0, but No. 3 Alabama made short work of the Orange at the 'Bama Bash as the Crimson Tide handed SU two lopsided losses.

After opening its season with a clean sweep of the Georgia State Tournament, the Syracuse softball team took its undefeated record on the road again. The Orange competed in the ‘Bama Bash hosted by No 3 Alabama, and finished the tournament with a 3-2 record.

Caira leads SU to sweep of Georgia State Tournament

Syracuse opened its 2011 season with four straight wins as the Orange swept the competition at the Georgia State Tournament.

The Syracuse girls softball team opened the season at the Georgia State Tournament this past weekend, and make quick work of the competition as the Orange won the tournament with a clean sweep of the competition.

Led by pitcher, Jenna Caira, Syracuse was able to dominate the field of play. She pitched both games and threw a combined 13 innings, including a shutout in the win against Morehead State.

The Syracuse softball team starts off it's season this weekend at the Georgia State Tournament. SU will also face Tennessee Tech and Morehead State during the two-day event.

The 2011 Syracuse University Women’s Softball team hopes that its impressive run at the end of last season will carry over to the beginning of this season, as all nine starters return. Hopes and expectations are extremely high for this veteran team, from the players themselves, fifth-year head coach Leigh Ross, and ESPN, who gave the Orange their first preseason votes for the Top 25 poll in six years.
