A Year In Review: 2014's top musical moments

Goldring Arts Journalism grad student Kate Drozynski picks the best recordings, the best live shows and the best musicians from 2014.

Music is personal. With a bevy of end-of-the-year best-of lists streaming from every outlet, it’s easy to forget that what matters most is how you felt about what you heard in 2014. I’ve been fortunate enough to see and hear a lot of things this year. Sifting through the musical memories and compiling a list of favorite moments is what these wrap-ups are all about. Here are a few moments that made my 2014 worth listening to.

It's kind of sad NY Mag is so painfully late in addressing the music scene in Brooklyn. That said, their list of iconic indie songs that define the scene is somewhat misinformed and nauseating.

It's usually a bad thing when the mainstream media finds out about a big indie band, because then the band loses it's mystique and edge---it's called selling out. It's a whole other thing when the mainstream media makes a total ass out of itself (which isn't rare) when trying to define an entire music scene--in this case, New York Magazine listing the Top 40 songs that define the music scene in Williamsburg, Brooklyn.

Fresh off a trip from seeing St. Vincent in action, two Otto-Tune bloggers debate the best leading ladies in indie rock.

Bloggers Jett Wells and Nathan Mattise were working on coverage of the recent St. Vincent show in Ithaca, N.Y. when they decided it was time for the second Otto-Tune Podcast. In the spirit of the trip, the debate at hand (carried on during the roadtrip even!) became who is the current queen of indie rock.

Review: Annie Clark rewards Ithaca’s surprising turnout with a legendary performance.

Hoards of college students and locals pressed the stage at local dive bar Castaways in Ithaca to get a glimpse of St. Vincent and lead singer, Annie Clark. Clark approached the microphone with her soft eyes and her innocently sweet voice, and as the band opened up with their hit single, “Strangers,” Clark let out her silky voice.

Being a part of a concert audience is an art form. In light of the upcoming St. Vincent show in Ithaca this Thursday, here's some tips on how to get the most out of your concert trip.

Just like any college football game, there's a lot of different elements that going into the preparation, viewing and reflection of a concert. It's more than just about going and standing idly as the music swoops in one ear and out the other. For the people who really love going to live concerts, they have a technique to get the most out of the experience. Fortunately, most of it is just a head game. Concerts embody a wild spirit that can only be harnessed with the right state of mind.

Indie-pop singer, songwriter and musician Annie Clark makes her way to Ithaca in October.

If you don't know who St. Vincent is, get acquainted. She's coming to Ithaca on Oct. 22. 

St. Vincent, a.k.a. Annie Clark and her supporting band, are an electric live band. I was lucky enough to catch Annie Clark perform over the summer at the 2009 All Points West Festival in Liberty Park, NJ, and I underestimated her big-time. With Jimi Hendrix guitar skills, and sultry vocals, Annie Clark is a stead-fast rising star.
