Three former SU lacrosse standouts to be honored

SU alums Gait, Hill and Lockwood to be inducted into the Upstate New York Lacrosse Hall of Fame

Former Syracuse University lacrosse greats Gary Gait, Ron Hill and Charlie Lockwood will be inducted into the Upstate New York Hall of Sunday, Oct. 21 in East Syracuse.

Their induction will boost the count of SU inductees into the Hall to 19.

Gait, current head coach of the SU women’s lacrosse team and 2005 National Lacrosse Hall of Fame Inductee, set the school’s single season goals record after netting 70 in 1988. Gait was also a four-time All-American and won the National Player of the Year in 1988 and 1990.

Season-ending shocker

Syracuse loses 9-8 to Army in the opening round of the NCAA lacrosse playoffs Sunday in a dramatic double overtime.

They were a team on a mission. After winning back-to-back national titles, the Orange looked forward to their third in as many years. Syracuse lost to Army just once in fifteen games since 1984. As the second ranked team in the country, the Orange (13-1, 5-0) looked to have every advantage over the visiting fourteenth-ranked Black Knights.

And the Central New Yorkers prevailed in the end – but not those dressed in orange and white. Army upset Syracuse 9-8, just five seconds before the second overtime period expired.

Snack-E-Tology 2010 needs a re-count to determine if Big Boeheim creator Pat Manley or pop-culture whiz Alex Fish would be champ.

Duke's thriller of a win over Butler not only crowned a national champion but also the Halftime Snack's first-ever Snack-E-Tology champ. But, it took a re-count before Alex Fish earned her title.

Cousins, Kentucky chew up Big Red

The 2010 NCAA East Regional semifinals took place in the Carrier Dome Thursday night, schools from border state Kentucky and West Virginia advancing to Saturday’s final.

DeMarcus Cousins will not be provoked, not on the basketball court.

A big strong 19-year old playing at the East Regional of the NCAA Tournament, the Kentucky freshman center had his intelligence questioned, his back strained, and his patience tested over the last 24 hours.

Emotions came to a boil with 9 minutes remaining in the first half of a offensively challenged semifinal between the Wildcats and fan favorite Cornell. Cousins snared the rebound of teammates DeAndre Liggins wayward 3-pointer, and knocked to the floor by Cornell center Jeff Foote.

The Syracuse regional has the Big Red, the Big Blue, and now the Big Hurt. West Virginia lost its point guard to a foot injury yesterday; yet as they’ve done all season, keep rolling with the punches.

It’s February 23, 2002 in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, and the University of Rochester is playing at Carnegie Mellon University in the final regular season game.

The Yellowjackets (21-4) need the victory to assure the at-large bid to the upcoming NCAA Tournament. I was a senior wing on Rochester, and with the game tied at 11-11, point guard Tim Sweeney (now an assistant coach at Elon University) got the outlet pass and passed the ball to me streaking up the sideline.

Orange open NCAA tourney by vanquishing Vermont

Top-seeded Syracuse shook off naysayers and upset watchers, dominating No. 16 seed Catamounts, 79-56.

 

The NCAA men’s basketball tournament is a new start for 65 teams. Teams get a coveted bid, push the re-set button, and go about making adjustments.

The top seeds usually need little adjustment, but Syracuse’s first No. 1 seed in 30 years came with strings attached. After winning 28 games and the Big East regular season title, Orange head coach Jim Boeheim had a to-do list that include: insert a new rotation, weather the team’s longest layoff in four months, and exorcise the Vermont demons from 2005.

Friday Five - NCAA edition

This is the ninth installment of “Friday Five,” a weekly column with analysis and insight on the Orange, the Big East and the rest of college basketball. The first round continues today with another full slate of games, capped tonight by Syracuse making its first appearance.

The NCAA Tournament is the re-set button for the college basketball season. The Big East Conference saw half of its members receive bids to the Big Dance, but after one crazy day, three of the 8 teams have been sent home.

That was the consensus when the NCAA Men’s Basketball Tournament bracket revealed Syracuse had dropped to the fourth one-seed behind ACC regular season and tournament champion Duke.
